Bull brl and 10/110 action

Is a full bull barrel on a 10/110 action to heavy for the action?

No, as long as you keep the length with in reason. I think a 40" bull might be a bit much .

Jim @ Northland told me when I ordered my .284 that 28" on a Savage LA was enough. He thought that 30 might be pushing it. 28" was fine with me, so I didn't push it.

One would think that with the outside dimensions being the same on small shank and large shank that the weak spot on the 10/110 action would be the barrel since the 12 f/tr comes with a bull barrel 30" long. That tells me even with the thiner walls on the large shank it is still stout enough.

But the Target Action does not have half of the top cut out of it like the 10/110. Because it is solid on top, it can take more weight. For a 10/110 I wouldn't go over 26" with a bull barrel. That's just me, I am perfectly fine shooting my 17" barrel at 800 yards.

A Savage Model 110 Long Action has the bottom open for the magazine box and the top open for feeding and ejection. It also has two action screws that are 5" plus apart designed to hold the action square and flush against the stock in the action area.

Now lets look at the 12 FT/R. The Model 12 FT/R is a Short Action with the bottom that is a solid structured tube. The top of the action is also a solid structured tube with the exception of the loading/ejection port (.600" X 3.00"). Now attach this tube into your stock with not two but three action screws with a spacing of 4.4" (make that a 3.44" spacing on the Benchrest and Palma models), and with a center action screw placed to avoid any action flexing. The size of the shank threads have been designed for the intended purpose of supporting a 30" Bull Barrel.

If you hang enough weight off the front of both of these actions which one would you expect to see that has a flexing issue in the middle? Is the flexing a major issue for accuracy on the Model 110? Not from every report I have seen but it does have to tip the scales in that direction when you give it enough thought.

I have a short action, blind mag, one piece Leo base that I have been kicking the thoughts of rebarreling to 223 1:7 or keeping it as a 22-250 with a heavier twist.

26" is as long as I want to go for either caliber, maybe shorter for a 223.

For barrel flex and heat disapation I would like to look into the 1" bull over the factory heavy profile.

I plan on having the barrel free float and for a gun that will see alot of trigger time in the field I want to do this once and do it right.

At the range the gun will shoot .75-.9" on average at 200y, but I want to go further for ground hogs so that means a tighter gun or gun barrel.
