3/4 to 1" really isnt that bad, especially if its a new gun. But anyways, what load are you using? Whats the twist? what bullets and powders do you have on hand?

It's not bad but I really think it would give 1/2". Bullets are nos 40gr btip, 55 gr Sierra btip, vmax 40 gr, 55 gr nos btip, powders at win 748, imr 8208, Hodgdon varget

Looks like you need some H4198. My load for the 40gr is 22.7gr of H4198. The 55gr is 20.3gr of H4198. Ive used Varget and 8208 and couldnt achieve the accuracy that I could with H4198 on the smaller bullets. Benchmark is also one that I found was a great powder for the small bullets but was getting hard to find locally.

...I only use BenchMark in my .223's.. 55gr Nos. BT on top of 26.1grs of BM, CCI-400prs, Win. brs.

What twist rate dies your rifle have? Some savages in the varmint contours have a 1:9 twist. If so, 55 gr would be the lightest for me. I would even consider a 62 or 69gr bullet. My FCP-K shoots .4" with 55gr federal premium loaded with nosler ballistic tips. I don't reload as of yet.

My model 11 seems to have a strong preference for Rem 55JSP over 20.2 gr. of IMR4198. Best shooting load that I found after hours at the bench and running test loads. Ragged cloverleaf at 100 yards and accurate out to 200.

If its a 1 X 9 twist, you ought to try some heavier bullets.

My Savage bvss shoots 77 SMK into one hole at 100 yds. It likes 24 gr of varget and Rem 7 1/2 primers.

Try 69 gr SMK 25.8 Varget, Hornady or Win brass, CCI BR primers, .015 - .020" jump.
75gr Hornady HPBT 24.2 Varget Hornady brass, CCI BR primers.

Disclaimer: 25.8 is near Lee and Hogdon max listed. Work up slowly yada yada.
This is in a 10FCPK bolt gun .223 and is validated to 403 yds via Nikon 440 laser range finder.

It (25.8 load)has no vertical without some help in my gun. It shot 5 shots inside 3" w/2 fliers@ 403 yds off Harris bpod. It shot 3/4"@ 100 yd. Im on iPhone will try a target pic if you're interested. Can't resize target pic prior to posting from iphone.

    Hope the info helps you.

Re: Load for savage 10 predator in 223

I've had a chance to do some testing of reloads for my new Savage Model 10 Precision Carbine

So far I've just been using Varget powder and two different bullets. The Sierria Match King 69gr. Hollow point BT's, and the Hornady Match Bullets 68gr. Hollow point BT's.

Thus far my results have been: BTW--the orange dot is 1" & all rounds fired at a 100yd target.

    Hornady, 24.5gr. Varget

    Hornady 24.7gr. Varget

    Hornady 25.0gr. Varget

    Sierria 24.5gr. Varget

    Sierria 24.7gr. Varget

From my initial testing (which I did not post any pictures) it appeared the Hornady's had the most promise. However, it wasn't until I shot the last 5 round group of Sierria's with 24.7gr. of Varget that I got the best 5 shot group of .755. So, I'm going to bump the powder up just a bit more and perhaps give it just a little more OAL and see what happens with the Sierria's. For the Hornady's, I'm going to bump the charge up to 25.2, and extend the OAL enough so the round fits the mag, and also lets the powder not crunch when the bullet is seated. (No compressed load)

Re: Load for savage 10 predator in 223

Dave, I know all guns are different but I noticed a target you had that looks similar to a 69SMK load of mine @ 125 yds. It is the one in the upper left under the "69".
It is the 25.8 load I mentioned in my previous post above and it looks like your 24.5 gr load.(you may want to look @ that load @ 400 yds.)

Here is the target of the same load @ 403 yds. that I mentioned above in a previous post when I was on Iphone and couldn't do a pic. Inside 3"@ 400 yds w/2 fliers, but inside 1.8" without the 2 vertical fliers.
No vertical(except for my 2 fliers) The holes marked with the "l" not the holes marked with an "x", they were 75 gr. The blue circle is 3", squares are 1"

Anyway may be of some help developing a yote load if you need the legs for 400+ yds.

I loaded some 69 grain SMK with 25 grains of IMR 4320 today that shoots great in my Stevens mdl. 200.In my Precision Carbine it likes 50 grain Nosler ballistic tip with 26grains of Accurate 2230.But both rifles shoot everything good.Just can't beat a Savage for out of the box accuracy!
