My gun has blond wood with checkering. I have yet to see another one like it. When was it made and did the checkering come on the gun or was it added?

Whiteline spacers? Is the checkering pressed in? Serial number? Barrel code?
Need more info...
I believe it was the successor to the Savage 340. Should be essentially the same rifle. I don't know what modifications were made though I think a hardwood (beech/birch) was used for the stock. I think a stamped checkering was added to the "E" series around 1965 and probably carried into the 840 line.
Not sure what whiteline spacers are? Serial number 142xxx Checkering appears to be pressed in There are multiple stamping marks on the barrel which one is the barrel code?
I know late reply.... I have an 840 stamped with Savage manufacturing info, but labeled as a Springfield 840. No checkering on mine.
840 was a springfield model

Blue Avenger is right...the 840 is a Springfield model. I have an 840 in .222 Rem. that I inherited. It, too, has the blonde wood, but no checkering on this one.
