    savage model 219,,,25/20

hello, I have a savage model 219 in 25/20 in pretty good shape,,no serial num on the gun so i'am not sure how old it is,other than I know my grandfather bought it for my dad before ww11 when he was a teen,,can anyone tell me if it would still be safe to shoot, would it be worth putting a scope on it for my grandson,or should it be left as is,,or is it worth anything?? thanks for any help

25-20's are one of the hardest calibers to find in the model 219.

Don't put a scope on it, it will destroy the value. I know some collectors would pay over $500 for one in the shape your claiming it's in so don't go making it a $100 gun by scoping the poor thing.

As for shooting it, go for it. I've got one in 25-20 as well and I have a hoot poking away with it at the range. It'll fire factory offerings of today with ease.

Inherited a savage 219 in 25-20. Back in the '50's he mowed a lady's pasture & she gave him the gun in exchange for his labor. The only thing original is frame & barrel. Barrel drilled for side-mount. Now a frankenstein: Furniture of unknown origin (monte carlo stock); misfit forearm. Winchester buttplate. Remington pistol grip cap. Military studs and swivels. A brownell latigo west germany sling. Weaver scope mounts. Bushnell sportview scope.
A cool frankenstein. The bore is pristine, so i decided to shoot it, since it came with 300 rounds of 25.20 wcf ammo. Set of dies too.
The scope was probably mounted in the '50's. Action was tight, so i plopped in a 50-year-old remington peters hollow point and zeroed on a swinging bowling pin at 50 yards. To my surprise, i nailed it every time. What a sweet shooter!!! Very little recoil. Will pass for a feral hog gun.
Since it is already cosmetically messed up, decided to do a little duracoating and dipping.
Now i want to find one in 22 hornet that has not been given a joan rivers facelift.

If you do some digging you'll see that the record breaking Jordan buck was taken with a 25-20.

Shoot it but never drill it...

I had a 215--22 Hornet that had dovetail but it was late 50s origin. It was a nice gun except the 8# trigger..

I load some 25-20s for my Marlin 27-as noted, a hoot to shoot.
