125 gr ballistic tip in 300 wsm

Is anyone using 125gr ballistic tips in a 300 wsm? If so how is accuracy and what is your powder of choice.I want to try them for a lower recoil option. How is meat damage. Thanks

Get a watermellon, drill a hole in it and stick a M80 firecracker in it. Light it and stand back. That's what a deer will look like.

Use something a little stronger like a Swift Scirroco or Nosler Accubond and download a little or as mentioned you will have a real mess on your hands.

Depending on how low-recoil you want to go... Hodgdon has some youth loads listed for the .300WSM using lighter bullets...

I was going to suggest it as a great varmint round, IF you don't want the hides.

Better to go with 168gr class bullets and slow them down. Too much hair, bone and red mist with your initially proposed load...

OK I just re-read your post and I missed the "lower recoil" part. What velocity will you be pushing them at? Most "reduced recoil" loads from the 300 WM (not sure about the WSM) tend to run at about 308 Win speeds, and if that is the case, I would still go with a heavier bullet, something like a 150 Accubond or so. If your speeds are going in the 2500fps range, the ballistic tip might just be the ticket. If you're goin 2700 or more go with the Accubond or similar. Heck at those speeds (2700plus) just use the cheap ole corelokts. They have worked for decades.

I use the R-P 165 gr. pointed Core-Lokt in my 300 WSM Striker at 2,750 fps., when I am in the "lead zone". This is a Barnes recommended load for the TTSX bullet using RL-15, which is a powder that I probably would not have tried in this caliber, without the recommendation. Works great. Best shooter has been the 168 gr. Barnes TTSX with the same powder, but it seems to be a bit tough for these velocities. I am going to drop down to a lighter bullet. 130 gr. TTSX for Antelope and 150 gr. TTSX for deer.

I use the 165 gr Nosler Accubond on top 58 gr's of IMR4350, great load! I shot a couple of yotes and a deer last year, meat damage is all dependent on shot placement, I like to aim for high behind the shoulder shots. yes there is damage but not much meat damage, on the yotes I don't care about damage other than what they are doing to our deer and turkey populations.
