    pillars & bedding?

I know this may be a stupid question but what is the point in pillars if your gonna bed the action anyways?

To keep from compressing the wood to get more accurate torque readings. The wood compresses and your screws stay tight for a while and then over time your torque values change and so does your point of impact. my theory anyways.

But doesnt the bedding act as one big pillar? I thought the purpose of bedding was to spread the torque across the entire length of the action. Even with pillars the head of the screw is still gonna be against the wood.

Nope, with pillar bedding the pillar is against the head of the screw on one end and against the ation on the other, thus allowing accurate and consistent torque values. Thats why you bed with the pillars all at once.

Im following you, I think. The pillar is inset into the wood? Told you it was a silly question.

The action will rest on the "pillar". The action screws only tighten against the metal pillar. Once you tighten down the action screws, they can't crush any wood.(or plastic)
I bed in two stages. Set the action on the pillars at the clearence you want, making sure the barrel is centered in the channel and glue them in the stock. After the bedding sets up "real good", (no use being in a hurry ) pull the action and go back and do the sides. Worked for me on the last 8 or 10 I've done. And use LOTS of release agent. ;D
