    savage 223 imp build help

    Hi all.
been having eye trouble and computer does not help so I will make this short.

many people say to build off a stevens 200 action.
so if I had a 200 action and a sharp shooter trigger
and a bvss stock and got a cbi,or shilen 223 barrel from northland
    =
would this be as accurate as or more accurate than say a model 12 bvss
or should I say or add is the model 12 action in any way better than the 200
other than bolt handle and trigger.

the 223 I would like to build is 223 imp
I would like to use 60 grain hornady and just maybe try the 75 vmax.
my encore shoots the hornady 60 hp just fine in 223 with 12 twist

now with the 223 imp and maybe try the 75 grainers
    would a 1 in 9 work or should I use 1 in 8 twist?
    thanks for any help.Kurt

I own a 12 FV in .223 and my buddy has a Stevens with a Mcgowan barrel in .223 and SSS trigger and his gun is more accurate than mine. It is almost not fun to shoot his because it is so accurate. As far as twist, in a factory savage barrel with a 9 twist I can shoot the 75s. Although I hear that it is hit or miss if it will stabilize the 75s with the 9 twist.

I just finished a .223 Imp build on a Stevens 200 action. I used a CBI barrel in 1:9 twist. I haven't shot anything heavier than 69Gr in it so I can't help with that question, but it is much more accurate than I am able to shoot. I'm still working on load development for it and it shoots 0.5 inch 5 shot groups @ 100 with me pulling shots to ruin otherwise 0.3 or smaller groups. Here is my rifle and some groups that I have shot so far.

I have a model 12BVSS 223 rem that shoots 52,69,70gr bullets well. have had some very small groups--< .5" at 100yds
I also have a Stevens action build with a Shilen 223rem 8 twist that is also a great shooter
I have got it shooting 52gr matchkings .3 to .5" consistently
Have not had much time to shoot 69 and 80 grain, still working on the loads but they look promising as well
I do think that the Stevens/Shilen rifle is more accurate than the BVSS but either one will easily be sub moa

My 223 AI has the 1 in 8 twist and shoots the 80gr Berger VLD very well along with the 75 gr A-Max. One surprise is how well the 52gr SMK also performs in my barrel. If you want the ability to shoot all bullet weights up to and including the 80gr at long range, go with the 1 in 8 twist. I get phenomenal accuracy with the 52 gr even while fire forming brass.

    sounds great.
I was wondering about the light or in my case 60 grains in the 1 in8' but sounds like thats
what i will use is the 1in8 twist so i go use the 75 or 80 and try them also.

now one thing I have not worked with a lot is a 223 I have done a lot of others and ackley's but not 223.

a 26 inch barrel should be plenty to burn 25-30 grains of powder and get a compleat burn should it or not.

    thanks Kurt

26" will be more than plenty.
