Remove Recoil Pad from a Savage Synthetic Stock??

    Guys,
Anyone who has done this before, please help me out. I've done quite a lot of mods to the synthetic stocks, but never tried to remove the recoil pad before. Are they screwed on with wood screws like most pads, or glued on?

I'm trying to cut down a LH sysnthetic stock as a starter rifle for a friend's grandson. What I want to do is cut it down, epoxy a wood block in the butt and reinstall the original pad on a grind-to-fit basis. Anyone ever don this before, or if you've just removed the original pad for a replacement, I'd appreciate your advice on how to proceed.

We view this as a temporary, disposable stock to serve an immediate need. As the kid grows, we'll replace later with a full-sized, better quality stock. I'll be doing other accurizing work on the rifle as well.

    Thanks in advance.

They are scrwed in, if you rub the pad you will find the screw holes.

I've never ground down a factory pad but did have mine off when I was adding weight to the stock. The pad looks as if it could be ground to fit.

when you cut the oval wood block to go in the end make sure it is pretty thick so the screws get good purchase and use a buttload of 2 ton epoxy and let it dry TOTALLY before messing with it. the holes are in the pad, just that the rubber self seals over the top. find the slit and stick a phillips in the hole and it will grab them right out. done it many times and works well, just ensure the glue is dry or the new screws will pull it right out of the stock, then you have a mess and have to start over again! have fun, easy project, but easy is fun!
