Why 22" barrels on Savage Weather series?

I was looking at the sporter rifles and noticed the 270, etc only had 22" barrels. I'd prefer at least a 24 to help reduce muzzle blast. Has this always been the case and I've just been living in a closet?

I'm no expert....but seems std calibers are all 22" max or so...mag calibers are 24" to help burn the extra powder charge in mag cases....modern smokless powders burn fast & clean and 22" will do it....I'm no physics major.....I'm a Teamster's Union truck driver........ ;D ;D

There was a theory about benchrest rifles that 21 3/4 inch was the best barrel length at 100 and 200 yards.

After a person shoots out their hearing they sure wish they hadn't. Longer barrels move the noise away from you but have less stiffness for a given diameter. They have more problems with harmonic vibrations.

I understand how everything works, just found it odd that savage puts a 22" barrel on a 270 and it seems that most other makers go with 24". I don't think I've ever owned a 22" barrel and was concerned with muzzle blast with the shorty.

22" is pretty standard for MOST manufacturers sporter weight rifles.

Muzzleblast? I don't think I've ever had a problem with muzzleblast unless shooting at night where your vision is ruined because of it..

I recently shot my 24" barreled .308 (varmint contour) at night and WHOA! Now that is muzzleblast! I was using 45 grains of Varget and to say that it was a light show was an understatement!

Hehe...my 243 isn't bad at night, but my 357 with silver tips is awesome. Big Fireball!

22" is probably mostly marketing and maybe handiness.

Personally I find a 19-20" barrel just about right for me for running around in a truck, sticking out the window of a 4x4 hunting plywood house without banging around etc. Also better for woods hunting.

22" is definately better than 24" for me, but if you are just setting up and waiting it does not matter so much.

I was not referring to the "light show" of muzzleblast but the sound. It tends to be louder...guess it is what it is. As for other brands, I know Remmy is a 24" in standard calibers.

I've always liked the longer barrel, but I guess I'll defer to what savage thinks is best.

I agree with you. I wish they had 24" for standard calibers and 26" for magnums for the little extra velocity you can get but that's just me. Not all Remingtons have 24" in standard calibers but a lot of their new models do. Same goes for Winchester. Winchester and Remington have made them both ways. Ruger uses 22" for standards and 24" for magnums also except for their 25-06 which gets a 24" barrel that is also a little heavier contour.
