here's what the one the gunsmith said.

try to order it why dont you. the part number is for the old style bolt. you need to be sure of what you have and what you are ordering. reguardless the bolt head in the catalog is ffl per factory

Hello after we talked on the phone today I got looking around for other
    stuff and I found a bolt head @ brownells.com the part # is 855-000-283
so I'm not understanding how its restricted like you said? Im not
doubting you at all you're the professional im just letting you know
    what I found.

I when I was on there I built a complete bolt minus the fireing pin and
the cocking button. For a $146.00

you may need a chamber reamer depending if the barrel is finish
chambered or short chambered. problem is the bolt head is restricted for
    sale.

    Hello
    My name is Matt

    And i have a savage 110 Long
    action chambered in 223 REM

    i would like to re-barrel in a
different caliber 260 REM to be specific.

    i have a small parts
list of what i think i need and would lie to know if its all i
    need.

    new ER Shaw barrel 24" 1 n 9 twist
    new 308 family bolt
    head
new 308 family blind magazine well and spring and follower
    go/no go
    gauges.
    barrel nut wrench

do i need a new front bolt bushing?
if so how do i know what one is right.
also i believe that my rifle is
a per 1999 so will the firing pin still work for the new
    caliber.

thank you for your time in this matter

    Matt cook

    Re: rebarreling a 110

Its true that Savage will not sell certain items to individuals, just FFLs.

Its also true that there are many other sources to get such "restricted" parts...like Midway, as one example.

ya i know that savage wont sell it to me. that's why i'm not going through savage. and i am going to Brownell's or midway to get the part.

i was just showing what kind of response's im getting from the local's.

so far i have gotten more help and info here from you guys.

    thanks

Sounds like your smith just doesn't want to work on a Savage. If he'll send them a copy of his FFL they will sell you
almost any part you want. My smith orders me parts quite often.

i will if i have to. but i called brownells and they said that they could sell me the bolt head without a FFL.

another question do i need a different recoil lug. or the factory one work?

The factory recoil lug will work but they arnt the best. Get a good aftermarket on from SSS, Or Jim Briggs at Northland Shooters Supply.

You have to call Jim...he's VERY slow about email because he's so busy but *will* return phone calls if you don't get him first try.

    Re: rebarreling a 110

If you are using a bench vise you don't hold the action in the vise, you hold the barrel in it and twist the action onto the secured barrel. At least that's how I do it...

One option is to cut V-notches:

The other is to drill a hole:

I think I drilled a half-inch hole in mine with a hole saw, though it might have been 3/4...don't remember.

well today was the day that i took the old barrel out of the action and screwed in the new one.

now just to double check the head space and and tighten the barrel nut down. and put everything back to gather after the 1st of teh year ill order the stock.

How did it go? Did you have any trouble getting the old barrel off?

    Re: rebarreling a 110

    yes but no

i tried blocks of wood and a bench vise with no luck so i bit the bullet and got a wheeler #2 action wrench and a good spray of PB blaster on the old nut along with the nut wrench it came right off.

Actually.....I think that "little woman" with the shining star dress is the one at the Savage Factory that does all of the barrel tightening on ALL of the Savage and Stevens rifles. So....I don't know why these guys complain when they say they have such a hard time breaking 'em loose from the action!!!! ;D :D
