Adjust the trigger on a 200

Any way to adjust the trigger on the model 200? I searched but couldn't find anything

There are screw adjustments for weight/travel ( did stevens come in 2 and 3 screw layouts ?)

recommendations seems to be not to try to go below about 3#, and to make sure it won't slam fire when bounced on the butt of the stock (empty of course).

Stevens 200 do not have the sear screw. The only way to adjust them is to use a thinner piece of wire and put less tension on it at the hollow screw it passes through. You could do some polishing on the sear step but be very careful because once you go to far it is hard to go back.

A three screw trigger will drop in as well as a SSS Competition trigger. I have adjusted a three screw the best I can and it is no where near the SSS trigger. The three screw is better than the two screw but not by much.

I bought a Stevens 200 at Grice Gun Shop, Clearfield, PA this spring. Great price, good gun, and I'm slowly turning it into a great gun at very little additional cost.

Did a trigger mod with smaller diameter .040" trigger spring wire. Reduced the trigger pull to something between 3 and 3.5 pounds.

I was trying to figure out how to reduce creep when I read an article about CZ rimfies and using aluminum foil duct tape (NOT the regular cloth Duct tape or Duck tape, but the real foil stuff that HVAC pros use) as a shimming material.

I took the stock off, put brake cleaner on a rag and fully degreased the sear engagement surfaces and then cut three small pieces of foil tape and used them as shims to reduce the amount of sear engagement.

I don't have a photo, but if you look at the diagram here, I put the tape on the upper surface where the arrow points to "Key NO.2" since Stevens triggers don't have that sear engagement screw. (I wrapped the edges of the tape around the sides of the trigger for a better hold.) If you look at White7's photo in this thread, the tape goes on the trigger just above where the blob of grease is.

I tested it (dry firing) and everything seemed to work except the safety. I backed out the safety engagement screw about one eighth of a revolution to compensate for the shim.

I re-Lubed the engagement surfaces with moly powder and dry fired it a bunch to work the moly into the metal.

Reinstalled the stock, banged it on the ground, slammed the bolt, knocked it in all directions with a big piece of wood and the safety works as it should.

After dry firing, there is pretty much no creep, and the trigger break is a surprise every time. Trigger pull is now somewhere between 2.5 and three pounds. Plenty light for hunting.

Right now I have no ammo for this rifle, but when I load some I'll let you know how it holds up.

Gotta love those Savage/Stevens rifles.

If anyone wants to try this, but doesn't want to spend the dough for an entire roll of tape, PM or email me for my address. Send me a SASE with a polite request, and I'll send you back enough tape to do several rifles. It doesn't take much. I used less than 1/2 square inch for the one rifle.
