1:9 ok for long range 280?

Putting together a 280 Rem- going with a 28" barrel, want to shoot the 180 VLDs as well as the 140s. Will a 1:9 be enough for the 180s?

Yeah, if I remember correctly, Berger advised 1:10 for the 162s and 1:9 for the 180s.
    More shooting, less typing.

Thanks for the reply- just talked with Jim at Northland re a new barrel and he suggested 26" to keep from straining the small shank. That's what I'm going to go with.

You going with the AI version of the 280?

Unlike many AI cartridges the 280AI offers a rather significant boost in performance over the vanilla 280 Rem.

Part of the reason is the slightly increased case capacity but the big reason is the 65,000 Psi SAAMI MAP for the 280AI. The 280 Rem has a MAP of 60,000 Psi as a consequence of having been introduced for the semi-automatic Rem 740 rifle.

Can you load the vanilla 280 to 65K? Sure you can but you'll be on your own because nobody publishes 65K data for the 280 Rem.

162gr Amax's at 3050 from a 26" tube is something you simply will not see with the 280 Rem.

I think what Jim was trying to say was that the barrel he wanted at 28" was too long and may cause a strain. So he recommended 26".

Might want to clarify that with him.

Yes, barrel length can affect pressure. So does actual bore size.....amongst a number of other items.

What Jim said was that when you start going longer than 28", especially with a varmint contour, you're hanging a lot of weight off of the threads of the action shank, and that with this being a small shank action he recommended going with 26" instead.

Ah...gotcha. Thought it was a pressure issue.

On the 31" 338 RUM, both 31" 6.5x55 AI M40 profile barrels - I bedded the entire length of the forearm as well.

On the 1.250" x 28" straight shank barrel, it is free floating on a single shot 110 action residing in a Choate Ulitmate Varmint stock. I did NOT use a barrel not on this barrel though.

Time will tell....but Jim is spot on.
