    M12 LRVP DBM 223 THUMPER

I decided that I wanted to try one of these rifles for some up to 500 yd target/varmint work and I'm glad that I did. First of all fit and finish is excellent with a bolt that is smooth as glass. The extra heavy barrel is front heavy, but this is a single purpose tool made for shooting from a rest. It rides the bags with no drama as the H&S stock should. The magazine is a thing of quality and it is easy to load and insertion requires no thought to the process. The accutrigger came factory adjusted perfectly which means a lot as I shoot benchrest am used to Jewel 1/2 ounce triggers. So far it is in the barrel breakin process and I've only tried Sierra 52 gr over 25.0 gr of IMR 4895 which it seems to love producing under 1/2" 100yd groups in 95 degree weather with a hot shooter Regards.

Sounds great, but I really don't think you can call anything under 375 cal a "THUMPER". ;D

5Wire, I'll try for a pic. You are perhaps correct Eric, a 375 would for certain Thump those P Dogs ;D

Well, I call my .35 Whelen a thumper with 250 gr slugs at 2600fps and MOA with green box Remingtons. Much better with handloads.

    Thanks, KAZ. Nice rifle.

I recently bought (and posted about) a 16FCSS in .223. I do wish it had been available with a heavy barrel, Accustock, and stainless steel. However, I am pleased with it. It shoots sub MOA with at least one factory load but the barrel heats up quickly and the groups open up until it cools.

5Wire, you would have laughed as I now have 67 rounds down the tube over three days starting at 7:00AM with it 85 degrees which has been the overnight low. So, trying out loads and doing proper barrel break in has had it's moments. Regards

It's been pretty hot around here, too. I've been shooting at a later time than you have, 10 a.m. to Noon or so.

I've been focusing on 69 Grain as recommended in the Savage manual for the 1 in 9 twist. I'm going to have to try some of the lighter ones, I guess.

Thanks 5Wire, you have encouraged me to load a test of Sierra 69 gr HPBT over some IMR 8208 which is a new to me powder. I'll let you know. You owe it to yourself to try the sierra 52gr hpbt over 26.1 gr IMR 4895 2.260 OAL which is a solid preformer in two of my pals savage 223s out to 400 yds. So far it is the best in mine. Regards

You're welcome. It will be a while before I'm able to begin reloading but does seem the way to go. I tried some 75 grain PRVI Partisan Match and it didn't get to MOA. The PRVI Partisan Match 69 grain, once I followed Savage's procedure in torquing the action (No wedge accustock) was pretty consistently sub MOA. Even better with Black Hills Sierra Match King 69 grain. I have to try the Fiocchi Match King HPBT again.

H4895 with 55 to 69 gr bullets have been nothing short of phenomenal in all of my 1:9 twist Savage barrels.

WORK UP to this load, but 25.0 of H4895 with Sierra or Nosler 69 gr bullets and CCI450 or Rem 7.5 primers produces 1/4" groups -just stacks the bullets on paper.

I can't imagine a 1/2 ounce trigger, the lightest I have ever heard of was 1.5 ounce. I shoot a 2 ounce on a bench gun and am afraid it will go off in a stiff breeze.

Thanks dcloco, I'll try those for sure. I'm still doing break in with approx 70 rds down the tube. It is so very hot here that it makes for a poor test of a load. leather5to1 this accu trigger is 2 1/2 lbs. I shoot a bench rifle in 22rf with a 1/2 oz jewel trigger. The rifle is in a Pappas one piece rest and you only touch the trigger wind the wind condition is right. I'm enjoying shooting this 223 with cheek weld, trigger squeeze for a change 8)

The older 16FCSS' did not come with an AccuStock, but the newer ones do. If your .223 is not stainless, it is not a 16FCSS. All Weather Warriors (model 16's) are stainless. Did you buy it new or used? You might like the model 12 FCV better than your current .223 since it has the AccuStock and has a heavy barrel (although not stainless), and is in the same price range as the model 16 Weather Warriors.

Stainless was a requirement, as far as I was concerned. I did consider the 12FCV but the SS tipped me over to the 16FCSS. I may try to see if a barrel change is possible via Savage.
