    Savage 219 30-30 disassembly.

    Hello all,
I inherited a Savage 219 in 30-30 cal, still in fair shape considering its been bounced around in a various pickups for the better part of 60 years and didnt look like its been cleaned in a long time. A quick function check revealed a problem. I got it home and cleaned off the grime and put a brush down the barrel. I drifted out the front pin to get the barrel off, and removed the stock.
There was a broken SAFETY PUSHROD. I got a replacement part from the good folks at Numrich.
Question is, do I have to remove the trigger, sear, and block also to get the firing pin out too?
Ive done quite a bit of on line searching and all I can find is the parts diagram. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure about the internals but why did you drift out the pin to get the barrel off?

All you have to do is pull outward on the top of the forarm and the forearm will come off, then simply break open the action and lift the barrel off the reciever pin.

My dad bought a 219 in 30-30 in the late thirites or early forties, I used it to kill my first deer in '46. a big spike. He killed many deer with one shot. always said,"place the first shot and you won't need any more" When he went to be with the Lord, I inherited it. by now it was really loose, so I probably traded it for something. should have had it reparied, you know, hind sight is always 20-20.

most of the parts are held in by spring tension. do not straighten anything that looks bent, they are that way on purpose!

I do not remember if the pin is 2 piece theraded or not in that gun.

As maddog said it is a standard brake open takedown. hope you did not mess it up to bad!!

Not to make you mad, but get a smith to work on it. very tight working area in there. If you are looking for extra barrels i have a 410 & 20 ga.barrels for sale.

To replace the firing pin-there is a very small screw to loosen(only loosen) and then the pincomes out. Kinda hard to describe as I sold mine but did replace the pin once.

I got a minty Sav 219L-D 30-30 for $130 on 2-13-2003 at the gun show.
It turned out to have a broken firing pin.

The book "A Potpourri of Single Shot Actions" by Frank de Haas 1993 , chapter 19 is "The Savage 219 Single Shot Rifle"

I love de Haas' writings, and it seemed strange how much he seemed to dislike his Sav 219D.

I took mine apart, put in a new firing pin, and buy the time I got it back together, I hated that rifle.

I did drill and tap it for a Weaver scope mount, to get away from the tip off rings.

He hints that earlier Sav 219s were much nicer.
I got another Savage 219 30-30 for $150. 3-24-2012 [the good old kind]

I got a third Savage 219 30-30 for $275 [the good old kind] 1-16-2013 [came with a shotgun barrel that says Sav 220]
