Need ,338 lapua load data, using 300gr. bullets

Have a buddy who just got a BA Savage, 338 lapua, going to get into reloading, where is a good place to start. He plans on shooting .300grain bullets, Lapua and Hornady brass. All help appreciated.

Use Lapua brass. My self and others have had extraction problems other makes of brass. Retumbo, VV N560 are probably the most popular powders I have seen used. Don't overlook the new Hornaday 285gr BTHP. I have had great success with it. 90.5grs Retumbo with a COAL of 2.700. CCI 250s Lapua brass. 500yd grouping 2.5 to 3 inches.

The first place to start if you are just getting into reloading is to buy a reloading manual (I like Sierra's and Lee's). Then read the whole thing. If you have a friend that knows how to reload, go sit through a session with him. Its easier to do it right, if you know whats its supposed to look like.

If you have any questions along the way, ask them here. Lots of knowledge and helpful folks on this board.

Don't buy any parts or consumables until you have read a bit first. Reloading is the last place you want to guess at what you are doing.

Guys, thanks for the replies. I have been an avid reloader, shooter gunsmith for 30 years. I just never had any dealings with the.338lm. The Hogdon manual looks like the way to go.

I have a Savage 110 BA .338 Lapua Magnum. I shoot in the southern NV desert.

My load: Lapua Brass, CCI or Federal 215M primers, Berger 250 grain OTM Hybrid Match, 98gr. H-1000, C.O.A.L. 3.680"
Same brass/primers but for the Berger 300 gr. OTM Hybrid Match 90.5 H-1000, C.O.A.L. 3.680"

Start with a lower charge and work up. Good luck. "Shoot Straight & Be Safe"
