    The .30-06 case

I feel the need to build on the .30-06 case but not sure what direction to go. I am actually going to do a classic hunting rifle first (nice wood stock) with just a plain .30-06. The .30-06 is one of the 5 firearms that every one should own. The other 4 being a Colt 1911, a .22 bolt action rifle, a lever .30-30 and a 12 gauge pump shot gun. I have the other 4 covered a couple times over so now I just need a .30-06. After that one I want to do yet another bench gun that I will probably never use. I have given some thought to a 6mm-06 or something like the .25-06AI. One other thought was to go to something like a .338-06. If I order the barrel now I might have it by Christmas....maybe.

Well I agree on your choices but most folks will go with the 1911A1 over the 1911 (they just don't know what they are missing).

As far as your 06 projects - 6.5-06AI and 375-06AI are the best rounds on the case (besides the original of course! After the 12 gauge it is the most versatile chambering known to man).

The 6.5 never even crossed my mind. I do have a couple of 1911A1's floating around too.

I happened to be thumbing through a reloading manual recently, the stats on a 338/06 are VERY impressive. 180 gr bullet at a touch over 3000 fps would put a serious hurt on game.

And the thought of doing a .338 is interesting to me due to the fact that I can have it rechambered for a .338 RUM or .338 Edge at any time. My newest 6mmbr was purchased with the idea of doing a 6mm RUM down the road.

Howe about a 280? Flatter and faster than an 06, better bullets, higher bc's than the 6.5s

Proven fact that a .224 hole will not put a zombie down.

LIAR!!!! If you shoot em in the head it will!

I have 4 of the 5, and all 5 if my .444 Marlin will count in place of the 30-30. Don't know why any one would want one of those???

Not worried about that, didn't say I didn't have any guns just not those five.

Won't work. You can't replace the lever .30-30 unless you do it with a .44-40......what do ya know, I gots me one of those too. I really would like a .444 in a lever gun though. That must be fun to shoot.

If you are a handloader, skip the 444 and go straight to the 45-70. Knocks zombies off of their feet.

The .45-70 belongs in a 5 shot revolver.

Yea, the .444 Marlin is quite fun to shoot! It will do basically every thing the 45-70(plus "every one" owns the 45-70, very few seem to have the .444 around here) will do, and I do hand load for it. My first mulie doe with this rifle was taken at 192yds. Nice shooting rifle/cartridge combo!

While I've been a lifelong admirer of the 270 WCF the more I work with the 280AI the more I like that cartridge.

I'm pushing the 162 Amax (.625 BC!!!) to 3050 out of a 26" barrel with zero pressure signs and Quickload showing pressures below SAAMI MAP (65Kpsi)!

That is an amazing performance for 64 grains of powder.

    My vote would be 280AI.

    Re: The .30-06 case

Nostradamus clearly predicted that the last man standing after the zombie apocalypse would be carrying a lever-action .30-30. The .30-30 is to hunters what the .22 is to hitmen: It's what you carry if you know how to shoot.

That's why I bought a .45-70 instead. It gives me room for error.

    Re: The .30-06 case

Have you considered doing a 6.5-06? That should really push em out there in a hurry.
They who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.
