    Pillar torque ?

If a stock is pillar bedded, what effect does torquing the action screws have? I thought once all the tolarance was taken up, that was it. Your not saying you are streching the screws are you? I'm thinking of it like this, if you tighten a bolt down to the bolt head, then torque it to say 30 lbs. you could torque it to 60 lbs. and the bolt won't move. It can't go any farther. Help me understand please.

    Re: Pillar torque ?

If your pillars perfectly match the receiver and have full contact, equally across the entire surface of both pillars (they don't!) you are introducing additional stress into the system that can get "released" in random ways when you fire a round (more and unprodictable vibrations).

The realit is that your pillars aren't level, they don't exactly match the contour of the receiver etc. and the more torque you put on it (beyond the amount it takes to deflect the steel of the receiver or aluminum of the pillars) the more you twist or warp things.
