    What barrel will work?

I'm new to Savage and wanted to know what aftermarket barrels will work on a Model 12 VLP 22-250? I was thinking about a 308.

    Thanks

Check the model number if it is actually a model 12 vlp the answer is yes. If it is a model 25 the answer is buy a model 12.

Any prefit small shank savage barrel will fit your action. You have a short action so that will limit you on cartridges if you want to make it a repeater. Since you are thinking 308 there should be no problem unless you get into long bullets loading to the lands then they might not fit in the mag. Single shot your possibilities are almost limitless!! ;D

Great! Thank You! That's what I needed to know. The rifle has no Mag, so I guess it's called a Center Feed? Is that correct?

It could be stagger feed if older and non accutrigger. If the mag stays in the stock when removed its CF, if the box is attached to the reciever its SF.
Look at it in the stock, if its got a slit for 1 shell its CF, if its wider an shells lay like side to side its SF, if you load it and they stay in line its CF, if not its SF...lots of ways to know.

I'm new to Savage, too, but I think the Model 12 is the common Savage action, with barrel compatibility with the 10/11/12/16/110/111/12/114 and other series. Assuming that's the case, the best value aftermarket barrel is probably E.R. Shaw barrel kits available through Midway, Brownell's, and other distributors. E.R. Shaw doesn't have the reputation or hand-lapping of high end match grade manufacturers, but many people report very good results with Shaw barrels.

It was made in 2007 and does have the Accutrigger.

KB I am getting confused with your statements. If it has no mag it is neither a stagger feed nor a centerfeed it is a single shot action. If that is the case then in all probability it will take just about any small shank barrel made to be used with the .473 bolt head if you do not want to change out the bolt head,if you are willing to change then just about any caliber will work.
Now if it is a target action then I believe you need a large shank barrel but the same applies as to bolt heads.
Probably the easiest way to confirm what you have is to call Savage 1 800 370-0708 supply them with the serial number and they will tell you exactly what you have.

OK sorry. I can put shells into the gun via the open action. I do not have a removable mag.

    Make sense?

O.K. regardless of the mag any small shank barrel should fit.

OK so depending on the caliber I choose, I might have to modify the bolt.
    Is that correct?

Correct, but don't forget you have a short action so you need to stay with short action calibers.
Remember a 308 will work in a long action but a 30-06 won't in a short action unless single fed and you would need to remove the bolt to extract.
