group buy .224 barrels- updated w targets from first shots

I had to bite on one.... ;D. For that price i cant resist. To make it better Gunshack is just down the road from me so hopefully i can just pick it up from them. Got a 22-250AI coming in 2 months from what they say.

sure is! i shyed away from shaw barrels cuz they quoted me a 18 week turn around time which is not do-able for me. but at a pretty good discount and half the time, theres no looking back!

i was gonna wait till oct or so and start lookiing for a varmint contour barrel anyway. ill call this one my bday present since we should be getting them in sept!!

I voted for a 6mm 26" SS varmint barrel. Maybe it will be the next group buy.Although the 224 is a great deal..

    Don't need it, but I ordered a 223 AI.....at that price, I couldn't resist!

I've long wanted to do a 223 AI build. Just wondering if the 9 twist will stabilize the 75 amax. Another question I have is the accuracy of a Shaw. Don't know if I should spend another $100 for a CBI. I have to have .5moa accuracy or I won't be happy. Are these capable with good hand loads?

Highly unlikely that the 1:9 and the 75 AMax will be a good match. That is a LONG bullet. The 75gn BTHP is usually the limit far a 1:9.

    Re: group buy .224 barrels

in the FAQ'S, sharpshooter listed the 8 twt is able to stabilize up to 80gr bullets. i would think that the 9 twist would stabilize a 75gr bullet. the exception to that would be maybe the bergers since they have a long nose and or barnes since it takes more copper to make up lead weight and that results in a super long shank end of the bullet. (im not even sure if they make a 75 gr barnes....lol)

hopefully someone chimes in w first hand experience.

in my 22-250ai, i only plan to shoot 60gr at the heaviest for deer sized game. most of my ammo w be of the 50gr variety (vmax and 52gr amax) and am considering the 50gr barnes for deer.

I've been wanting another 225 win. At that price looks like I'll have to order one.
Don't know why just always liked that caliber.

    Re: group buy .224 barrels

The Miller Stability Factor for the 75gn A-Max with a 1:9 barrel is 0.979. 1.0 is stable. Less than that is not. The 75gn BTHP from the same barrel has a stability factor of 1.39. The difference in the length between those two bullets, even though they are the same weight, is rather significant. The A-Max is 1.110" and the BTHP is 0.982". By comparison the Berger 80gn VLD is only 0.007" longer than the A-Max.

Length, not weight, is the primary factor in determining the required twist rate to stabilize a bullet.

I stabilized the 70Gr Berger VLD in my 1:9 twist, worth a try, if not you can sell the bullets pretty easily.

I'd think it'd be just fine considering the 223AI can push a 75gr bullet north of 2900fps, giving you a stability factor around 1.05...which is more than 1.0 ;D

Well i got my new barrel fit and headspaced to my scoped action and everything went together without any problem. AI gauge has slight drag on it and the reg 223 gauge will not allow the bolt to go into battery. Ill will be at the range tomorrow to zero in the rifle barrel and fire some break in rounds to polish the bore out a little but its already looks mirror smooth. Full report tomorrow w pics.

    Re: group buy .224 barrels

Ok. I finally got some rounds downrange and the new barrel worked out pretty good. No complaints from me. Keep in mind im not a bench shooter nor am i that into competition. Fireforming went good. Basic wanna be mil spec gunshow reloads of new ammo in commercial brass and 55gr pills gave pretty good accuracy.....better than my barnes reloads. It was kind of breezy but it did get a few good groups. I was kind of having to much fun pegging our gong so i wasnt concentrating to well but thats usually what happens...lol. I broke in the barrel doing 5 shots w cleaning w butches between each shot then started running 5shot groups w cleaning between each group for 3-4 groups. Then i just started running groups w no cleaning. I did get traces of copper oonce i started running the groups but it didnt look to bad. The barrel seemed to tighten up a little once it got really dirty after 50 rnds or so. Kind of interesting.

    well here are the pics.

First is a 10 shot group w the mil spec gunshow reloads. Second pic is a 5 shot group that was going really well then the last shot was the flyer which i pulled cuz a guy two tables down let off his shot right before mine cuz he was shooting a 7 mag and it caught me off guard and lastly is another 3 shot group early on in the shooting session.

    Re: group buy .224 barrels

Correct. I ran about 100rounds thru it today and that was the best i got w no load developement. My nickle brass even fireformed well which surprised me. I thought it would crack for sure.
