    6.5X284 LOADS ? New Rifle.

    Hello All,
Ok I just purchased a new Savage Model 12 in 6.5x284 BVSS. with a 1X8 twist. I WANT YOUR FAVORITE PET LOAD FOR TARGET SHOOTING. 100 yards to start.

Should I go with the 123Gr or the 140gr and of course the powder type?
    Thanks
    Jerome

Remember, start low and build up slowly.

100 yards is way too close for this cartridge. I shoot F-Class (a ton of fun!) and shoot from 600 yards to 1,000 yards. Great cartridge. I prefer Sierra 142 gr and 4831SC with CCI BR primers.

I would shoot at 100yds to dial the scope then move it out. 140gr Berger or 142 Sierra should group MOA or less out past 600 with a good load. Do some research on line for published charges and work from there. Have fun and remember it doesn't have to run full throttle to kill paper. Idahojoe

Re: 6.5X284 LOADS ? New Rifle.

I have 2, both 30" tubes that I timed and trued myself, built from ground up. I tried all the 6.5x284 powders/primers. I had hangfires twice w/CCi benchrest primers, so went back to WLR, Winchester Std. I shoot a light load, H4831 std, not the SC! MY guns liked the older long cut better, and found a deal on it in the keg, bought 2 -8# kegs. I am shooting the Sierra 142's, molyd by me, with 49.2grs. This may seem like a light load, but it is going 3050 out of a Chrono for 2-3 shot groups. I can lift the bolt with one finger on a fired round, super easy on brass, I use Lapua brass excuslively, never had any problems. Both my rifles will shot 5 shots into the low.3's or better at 100 does that good at 200 also. I am a 6.5 fanatic, 6.5 Swedes, the 6.5 x.284 and the 6.5x27Lapua, have built over 100 swedes. If you can find the old white box WLR primers, they are the best out there, new ones do ok, but the older ones are slightly more accurate in all my loads/guns. I have never had a rifle that shot the custom bullets, Bergers etc, better than the Sierras, hunting, varmint hunting or target shooting. All my 6.5 cartridges have eithe 1-7&1/2 or 8 twist barrels, the custom builds have Shilen, Bencmark, and ER Shaw barrels on them. I did 20 shot break in, clean and shoot every shot for 20 then a 5 shot and ready to go after that. Factory Savage barrels will take more break in. Holler back if I can help. Sam.

i have the same rifle 112 bvss 26 inch bbl 6.5x284. tested both h4350 and h4831sc with sierra match king 142. tried fed match and cci br primers.. the h4831sc and cci br primer worked best for me . tested yesterday at 100 yards and best groups were .256 and .297 at 2864 fps average. so now for 600 and see how goes. my load is over published data but i worked up to it and watched for pressure . good luck

i am very pleased with the rifle, i put nightforce 2 pc bases (20 moa) on it and a sightron s3 8x32. i purchased it from northland for a good price, wish i had bought two lol. I do wish it was a 28 inch bbl but thats just for 1000 and velocity.

I have two sav. 6.5x284 and one win costom 6.5x284, the savage f-class with 30 inch tube and target action I shoot about 2850 med load good for 600yds using h-4350 my 111 long rangehunter is a bit of a problem the 26 inch barrel is hard to get over 2850 with 140 bergers vld I was shooting 2840 with 48.5 gr 4831sc but when temp climb over 85 I opened primer pockets. The 6.5x284 doesn't give a lot of warning on preasure until your there be careful working up to max loads. Sierra #5 has good starting loads. Hogden load data with Hybrid 100 loosend primer pockets 2.5 gr before there max load. at temp above 80deg. in my 111 but my 12 f-class will will handle there top loads. My 111 hunter is tight I reach preasure long before most other data i have read about on web sites so do your own load work up and have fun this cal shoots been shooting them since 1980. 1and8 twist shoot 140 gr bullets sie 142 always do good for me but for hunting medium size game game I'm going with 140 berger vld. My win mod 70 is 1and 10 twist I shoot 120 spt at 3250 I use a strong load of 3100,in this gun. This cal. will print under 1/2 inch groups without much trouble my savage rifles shoot good at about 2700 I mean under that 1/2 inch mark then they shoot tight groups again on the top end beware they dont have long barrel life, but if you own a race car you might as well race it.
