Just got a 110 (older model)

So, I just got an older model 110 in 30-06 on Saturday.

    Love the rifle, but...

The LOP is 13 1/2 inches in the wood stock. Now, with 30-06 I'm thinking I need to put a whimp pad on (yes, I'm 55 and recoil is more of an issue now).... Problem is, to do that, I'll be needing to cut off an inch of the wood to make the LOP stay at 13 1/2 inches (which is what I need)....other than just take it to the saw, any suggestions for a first time stock worker kind of guy?

Next, the scope rings are shoot through types, since the iron sights are installed on this barrel. What would be the best check rest to use (seeing that this is a wood stock?)

(My plan is a Boyds left handed stock for right handed actions in the next few months, the thumb hole variety)

Ive had good luck on the cut off deal by using good quality mask tape arround stock where you cut really helps with splintering also of course is really good thin kerf carbide cutoff blade.

    Thanks, guys.

If this was a good stock (i.e. Boyds, et al) I would be taking it to a smith...but this is just the 2x6 savage stock....
