    Savage Axis/edge project

This started as a stock Axis in 243. It is now a 223 made from parts I got from this site and some of it's sponsors. The original plastic stock was used and is shown after some modification. The idea behind this was to make a low recoil gun that my wife and 7 year old daughter could both shoot. The LOP had to have about 3.5" of adjustment so it required my own design.

Very good for a gun that "can't be customized" What barrel did you use?

    Need more info
    Who did the bolt body?
Where did you get the bolt handle?
What bolthead fits, long or short action or did you get one for the Edge/Axis?

Very interesting mods on the stock. What did you use for a molding compound?

It's a 223 savage barrel I purchased used from a member here. I just polished it a bit and dura coated the flutes.

    SSS did the bolt body.

The handle was one I got from a member here whom i believe posted above. IIRC it was about $20 shipped. I cut my factory handle and attached this one. I welded it in place and then filed my butt off to accuire the look I got. There's no seam and looks machine cut.

the bolt head is the same as the other savages uses. I got the 223 head from midway usa. the gun from the factory was a 243 so I figure its a short action.

better to give you the long answer here with more info than you requested. I ground out the barrel channel to removed the dividers, cut off the molded trigger guard, and cut out the front portion of the butt stock to allow for the pistol grip. I then ground the entire stock, and drilled holes in it. After that I ground a 3/8" channel from front to back and bent some 3/8" steel rod to the contour of the channel on both sides of the stock. I used JB weld to hold the rod in the channel. I then Tiger haired, and fiberglass resined the stock inside and out. I made sure the resin went through all the holes I drilled so the original stock was entirely encased in fiberglass resin. After that I started shaping using automotive body filler. This part took a couple weeks of coating and shaping. The recoil pad is epoxied to a steel plate which is welded to 3/4"-10 threaded rod. A 2" threaded rod coupling nut is epoxied into the butt stock to give me about 4" of LOP adjustment. I purchased a savage trigger guard form brownell's, fit it to the stock and bedded it in place. In order to get the action bedding to stick I had to first apply some spray epoxy to that area I got at the paint store.

I don't know that my design here would hold up to a larger cal. But it is hold up after 300+ rounds of the 223.

I let my girls pick the color ;D

I never shot it in any other configuration. The stock was done simply for comfort and fit to my wife and daughter. The gun shoots very well. Sub 1/2 moa at 100, and my 7 year old daughter has a 536 yard ground hog kill with it too!
