    75gr bullet from 12FV .223?

Anybody have luck with the Hornady 75gr A-Max out of the factory 26" 1:9 twist .223 barrel?

Seems that most internet logic says you need at least a 1:8 twist to really see benefits of this weight bullet, but there are enough reviews on Midway claiming good accuracy from 1:9 barrels that it has me curious for first-hand reviews.

Of course a box is less than $20 so I wouldn't be out a ton of money if I just bought some and loaded 10-20 rounds....but if the odds of success are low then I'll stick with the 68gr BTHP.

I have the factory 1-9 22-250 LRPV and thats all I shoot out of it. No problems from the 250
PM me your address and I'll send you a few to try out.

75 AMax will definitely shoot well out of your 1:9 twist Savage barrel.

24.5 Varget, CCI BR, 75 AMAX, WIN case = 1" @ 300 yards for my 12 BVSS. Loaded on Redding BR dies.

They shoot well in my son's 1/9 twist 223 Rem and my 223AI.

    75 Amax in front of VV N140 and ignited by a Remington 7 !/2 = 1/2 MOA at 300 yards in my Model 12 1in 9' twist .223.

I called Hornady with the same question. One of their customer service reps told me that a 1 in 9 would stabilize up to a 80 grainer as long as you pushed it fast enough. That is, of course, with their bullet and ogive.

I think a longer Berger VLD would be problematic.

    Yep,

    75 grain A-Max's work nicely in my 1:9 twist 10 FCP-K,
    Lapua brass, Rem 7 1/2 primers, 25 gr. Varget. Sub 1 1/2"@300m.
But I'll add that 69gr. Sierra MK's do a little better, same except 25 gr. H4895.

    cheers, Chris

Forget the 105 A-Max in the .223 comment. They don't do well at all. Misread .223 as .243! Duh.

    isn't the 105 A-Max a .243 cal bullet rather than a .224 cal ? Or did I miss the point?

Oops. Read .223 as .243. I used 73g Bergers in Savage .223s but as for 75g most seem to do best in 1-8 twists. Having said that I did load some 77g Sierras that did ok but the Bergers were much more accurate.

No problems shooting 75gr AMax in my Savage barrels. Hornady's 75gr BTHP also works in my 1:9 AR barrels and can be loaded to 2.26".

Those 73gr Bergers are very accurate in my Savage and Shilen barrels.

Another sleeper that shoots like a laser is the 65gr JLK.

    bumping my ancient thread...

For those who shoot the 75 Amax in their 223, how long do you load it?

The 75 HPBT shoots very well 0.010" off the lands in my 12FV...does the 75 A-Max seem to like a jump or a jam?

    Thanks!

My 223 didn't like the 75 gr Amax. But did good with the 75 gr BTHP. Although I had the best results with 70 gr berger VLD's.

    Re: 75gr bullet from 12FV .223?

just got in from the range did some load testing with the 75gr amax .i was alittle worried that they would not stabilize in my lrpv 1\9 twist barrel but oh yeah first 5 shots 1.04"outside to outside @ 300yrds
    2nd five shots 1.56"outside to outside @ 300yrds
best prat was they shot about 5" higher than the 75 gr hornady match that i normally load which means i gained some clicks for longer ranges(500-600)

You should have no problem getting them from Midsouth Shooter Supply, Midway or Graf's.

Just got back from the range where I was shooting my Savage 12FV in .223 with 75gr Hornady BTHP.

First, 3-shot group at 100yds from a rest.

After initial scope adjustment, another 3-shot group.

No, sorry....I currently do not have a chrono.

According to the Hodgdon reloading website 21.0gr of H335 is listed at 2624mv and 23.0 shows 2814mv. I'm using 22.0 out of a 26" barrel, so best guess is splitting the difference 2720mv??

Went out today and this was another 3-shot group using the 75gr BTHP. This rifle definitely loves this load!
