300 Win Mag caliber change options?

I have a Savage 116 300 Win Mag and am considering buying a new barrel/muzzle brake for it and buying a synthetic stock. While doing this, I would like to look at the options for other calibers for this action and wondered if anyone could tell me what this action could easily be converted to. I am particularly interested in the 300 RUM or some sort of 338 variant.

Your only limited by the magazine and bolt head so any caliber is possible. IIRC, the RUM will work with your current bolthead and should work in the 300 magazine too. I'm not sure on the 338's.

Here is a list of the long action cartridges that use a magnum bolt face. Some of these will be too long for your magazine, but you could use it as a single shot.

Long Action Calibers, Mag bolt face
    264 Win Mag
Win Short Mag series fits very well in the long actions
    7mm Rem Mag
    300 Win Mag
    338 Win Mag
    300 H&H mag
    375 H&H
    264 Wby Mag
    7 Wby Mag
    300 Wby Mag
    340 Wby Mag
    7 Rem Ultra Mag
    300 Rem Ultra Mag
    338 Rem Ultra Mag
    338 Edge (338/300 RUM)
    7mm, 30, 338, 375, 416, 404 Dakota
Lazzeroni Family (I believe, someone correct me please)
    404 Jeffreys

Thanks for this list. Very helpful. One thing I am wanting to do is not render the action as a single shot, so if I wanted to go 338, that would mean I would need to do something like 338 SIN. I am interested in 300 RUM and a couple of others on the list.

338 X 375 Ruger is not on the list and is a very exceptional standard no special anything cartridge. A 30 X 375 would also be a great standard action no fuss number.

The 338sin is getting some very good feedback over @ longrangehunting. This will probably be my next build.

.338WinMag will work with only a barrel swap.

So someone help me out here ; I could take my 111 in a 7mm rem mag an turn it into a 300 win mag ? Would I need to change the magazine or anything ? Or just the barrel ?

You just need to change the barrel to go from 7mm Rem mag to 300 win mag.

I changed mine over to a wildcat I designed called the 300 Venom Magnum.... it only takes a re-chamber, and then a full length sizing die.... in some cases I can get well over 200 fps more velocity. You can still use 300 Win Mag ammo in the rifle as well. It was cheaper than a new barrel, or a new gun. Well that was until I started dressing up the little Stevens.... I really like the accuracy, and improved velocities. I have pics of it on my free web-site, but am not sure about posting the link here. I will try to load some pics here using photobucket or something later.

Here are the pics... started as a cheap little project rifle then liked the accuracy, and started spending money making it look good!

I went on your site, that option is very interesting. Have you done any testing with heavy bullets (200 gr.+)?

Currently working with 220 Grain Sierra , 225 grain Hornady , 230 grain Berger, and 240 Siewrra grain bullets... 220 grain shoot really good.... I am really watching the Sierra data as they use a Savage with a 26" barrel in their tests....
