My self, If I cannot comfortably put my hand on the barrel it's to hot, not counting fire fights.

If you can't touch it, put it down and let it cool.

Can't help but think it'd take 25+ rounds from your average 223 with a varmint contour barrel to get it that hot...

It will cool fast standing up with the bolt open. But then if you want it cool NOW there are ways of doing that also

Usually a thicker barrel will take longer to heat up, but will also take longer to cool down once you get it heated.

If you cant hold your hand on it then let it sit for a couple minutes..Unless your in a hot dogtown, then in that case Let-R-Eat!!!!!LOL

Depending on what kind of shape yor hands are in, they may not be good for measuring heat. I use the under side of my wrist, if you can't set it on the barrel right in front of the action and let it sit there- too hot.

The thin sporter barrels, especially in the belted magnum cartreidges, will be hot by the second shot. I usually have to wait at least two minutes between shots when I'm testing three shot groups with my 7mm mag.
