Rem/age Project THE SAVAGE TWIN BROTHER

This will test the brotherhood of barrel nut!!!!!!!!!
Started out with a Remington 700 bdl 30-06 bought at a pawn shop.
Called Jim at Northland Shooter supply (763-682-4296) next day and ordered a 26" light varmint .700 at muzzle in 6.5 284, over sized recoil lug and a rem/age barrel nut. Jim said to lap the lugs, slot the action for the keeper on the recoil lug, true up the threads, and wait that to long 8-9 weeks for the barrel.
Got on Boyds seconds rack and bought a Feather light thumble hole in shady camo and a savage one too in Nutmeg (second rack).

So i took apart the gun

Lapped the lugs with 600 grit lapping compound( was at about 80-20 contact on lugs)
slotted the bottom of the action for keeper on recoil lug

Sanded the stock down to a nice finish, and Tru oiled it.

So 9 weeks later a sweet barrel shows up. It was all ready to go so i started the assemble, got it all togather in no time.

Took it apart and taped it up, coated it in release agent and glass bedded the action and first 1 1/2" of barrel.

Put it back togather and got leupold mounts and high set 30mm rings and mounted it with a 6.5-20x50 30mm tube BDC Vortex Viper scope. Took butt plate off and filled hole in butt of gun with weight to balance it just in front of bolt face.

Range Test

First 8 shots with 140 SMK bullet, and Lapua brass at 100 yards.(paper was taped to board so it riped the paper bad when it hit.

Went home and started a new round at the range the nexted day. Sighted it in with the rest of break in bullets then fired a three shot group before latter test.

The next day went out and played around with friends and got in the 1000 yard club. (16" dong)
Shooting 1000 yards with the load that is so light i had to adjust 21.5 moa on turret and hold on bottom of bdc that is 11 moa.

Have one of these barrels on a Marlin XS7 and did not order the recoil
lug that Jim has to offer, as I had already bedded it.

It's a switch barrel and the barrel pictured is a McGowen (don't have a photo of
the Criterion 7mm-08). At any rate, it's a real pain to keep the recoil lug centered
while trading barrels. It would be easier/better to get the proper recoil lug and
redo that area of bedding in the stock.

What did you use to slot the bottom of the action for the keeper on the
recoil lug? And how did you make sure it was centered?

After seeing these it make me wish I did not sell my 243 model 700. But Savage is better anyway.

It is simple with this tool.

Make a line down action centered in bolt holes. Us a small small triangle file to get first cut centered on line then us a small square file to do the rest. Them get close see if recoil lug will slide up and down go little deep so bolt don't bottom out.

Cutting the notch for a pinned lug is a piece of cake. I've done a couple of them now and it would be hard to mess it up. FWIW the Criterion 22-250 I put on a buddies Remington shoots extremely well.

The tool is the Kleinendorst Rem 700 barrel tool.

It wouldn't let me post the link before because I was signed in on the Brownells dealer site rather than the public site.

bought 2 of the Criterion varmint contour 26" installed on remington 700 vsffll's with rem age nut and factory lug, useing the wheeler action/alienment tool and savage wrench. shot about 10 break in shots grabbed a box of shells from old barrels, both guns shoot one hole groups at 100 yards, didnt even have to work on stocks. [barrel nut fit] getting ready to order jewell triggers for them. just ordered a 30" 6x 47 lapua for another rem 700 going to do same thing except its already got the jewell. thanks jim at northland [changing barrels on remington is easy plus you can get a good trigger] by the way you have to center the lug in the wheeler tool

Re: Rem/age Project THE SAVAGE TWIN BROTHER

I had a quick question regaridng the original factory Barrel thats being removed.. Is there any way to use it in the furture as a Rem/Age barrel? Can you extend the threads to allow nut installation so the original barrel doesn't go to waste?

SuperChuck,
You can put the original Remington barrel back onto your Remington Action any time you wish. Just make sure you use the original Remington Recoil Lug or your headspacing will be off.

That barrel will last forever with 46 grains of 4831SC too. Probably at about 2700 fps or so? Nice low pressure load and accurate load.

Re: Rem/age Project THE SAVAGE TWIN BROTHER

Funny I was thinking the same thing..46gr of H4831sc??? you should be in the 50.5-51.5 to reach the 2950fps mark. I did however have to move up to 53.0 to make that fps but then after new lot of powder, i was then back to 51.3gr like the other 4 guys I shoot against. seems like 51.0-51.3 is the magical node for this caliber.

On the flip side of things you shall get another 250-300 rounds or more than I. But I'm gonna drive it like it should too, If your gonna push it under 2850 fps, its no better than a .308 launching a 175smk.. Speed it up and beat the wind!!! You will love once you see the potential of the 6.5-284..

Re: Rem/age Project THE SAVAGE TWIN BROTHER

Ya you could speed it up but I havent saw a timer on a target yet. It likes berger bullets at 2850 so if you like big and slow go ahead. I have other 6.5 284 with 28" bull that shoots 3100 with retumbo and 142 SMK that all are in same hole. Some times things like it slow and some times they like it fast!!
