Re: Anyone have any problems with a barrel from Savage-barrels.com?
I have the same problem - the barrel nut and action don't fit the barrel threads. As suggest by SB and McGowen, running sand paper over the threads is not working. I plan to return the barrel to McGowen to be reworked.
Re: Anyone have any problems with a barrel from Savage-barrels.com?
As the voice of McGowen Precision Barrels I found this posting and thought that I should come in and talk about it a little.
At McGowen Precision Barrels we turn all of our Savage threads on a CNC. Typically we stay towards the high end of the tolerance. But each and every barrel is checked with a brand new nut that we purchase directly from Savage Arms. Obviously there is something going on and I'm at a loss to explain what. I will talk to my head machinist about this problem and have him re-program the threading program for the savages. Hopefully this won't be an issue in the future. One thing that seems to help, or has helped in the past is that if you wrap a semi-aggresive emory cloth around the threads and turn them in your hands a few times, check your nut and repeat if necessary this usually will take the tops off of the peaks of the threads and allow it to easier go into your nut or receiver. Not sure why a brand new nut works and yours doesn't but we're working on it at McGowen.
Re: Anyone have any problems with a barrel from Savage-barrels.com?
This doesn't make any sense to me really but I am putting 2 guns together currently so I have 2 actions. I got my 338 Federal barrel and the gauges just came from PTG so I went to put it together. No problem threading the barrel into the action, but the barrel nut for that action would not thread on. I grabbed the barrel nut for my other action and it screwed on no problem. The only difference between the two is that one is blued the other is stainless. It doesn't matter for me really because my other barrel is going on without the nut but I thought that was odd.

This is good news. I decided not to go the emery cloth route on my barrel. Talked to a local guy and he put it together for me for $40. I'm building this rifle for a long range steel thumper so I wanted everything to go togehter smoothly.
Re: Anyone have any problems with a barrel from Savage-barrels.com?
Mine seems nice but I'm disappointed with the finish. I ordered matte black and the finish was very thin and sort of rusty. Goign to shoot it Wednesday so as long as it shoots I'll be happy.
Re: Anyone have any problems with a barrel from Savage-barrels.com?
taylorce1, Sounds like your shop treated you well. On a completely different note. That shoot in Raton is a hoot. I used to live and work in Raton and only got to shoot that match once. I shift always was on Sunday or I was getting off Sunday morning too late to go to the shoot. I am going to try to make it down there once if not twice this year.
Re: Anyone have any problems with a barrel from Savage-barrels.com?
Just another update. My gunsmith said the threads were the right pitch but the vallies between the threads were not cut deep enough. So the emry cloth wouldn't fix wouldn't have done me any good as the barrel wouldn't have ever threaded on.
Re: Anyone have any problems with a barrel from Savage-barrels.com?
Your smith came with the same conclusion as I did as I stated above.

Yep that is why I took it to the GS, because of your post.
Thanks for the heads up!
Re: Anyone have any problems with a barrel from Savage-barrels.com?
I worked with Jon at Savage Barrels and Dan at McGowen to return my barrel with the problem thread sizing. They turned around the order quickly and made it right and I have my 6.5x55 barrel back and ready for action. The barrel looks great.
Re: Anyone have any problems with a barrel from Savage-barrels.com?
Problem is that threads don't mate up on the "peak and valley", nor are they measured in that manner, but rather on the Pitch Diameter (sort of datum line at about the midpoint of the flank). There should be a standard tolerance for the PD for any standard thread and tools to measure this directly. There would always be the old 3 wire method of measuring the PD if the more user friendly tools weren't available. A CNC lathe wouldn't need reprogrammed, just adjust the offset for the threading tool. The operator will be doing that anyway as the tool wears and the bearings heat up and cool down. Been a while since I ran a CNC lathe, but threads aren't that hard on one.
Re: Anyone have any problems with a barrel from Savage-barrels.com?
i have a stainless 308 1-12" twist with flutes and threaded muzzle on order. i sent ouut a few emails to jon and mcgowan and jon said the have pushed his orders out to 6 weeks and im on week 5. but if it went over 6 weeks to let him know and he will push them for a shipping date.
mcgowan said they are turning them around in about 6 weeks as well.
so a week or 2 to go and hopefully i can get my project done. the wait is terrible but hopefully worth it in the end.

Re: Anyone have any problems with a barrel from Savage-barrels.com?
My brothers barrel was a little longer than 6 weeks but the e-mails were answered promply and the barrel was excellent and shoot scary accurate. Fit and finish is top notch. All I can say well done. Idahojoe

Re: Anyone have any problems with a barrel from Savage-barrels.com?
I came across this thread, because you guessed it, I ordered a barrel from savagebarrels and first off I ordered it fluted and it wasn't when I got it, I asked if I could get a replacement quickly for it to be the right one, or do I have to just take a refund for the fluting. the reply I got was he hadn't told McGowen about the fluting, it was just hand written on the copy of his sales reciept. rather than try to get me what I ordered they said" My Bad" and that they refunded the cost of fluting because they didn't think I would want to wait another 6 weeks. I feel like i pretty much got blown off and its a "take it or leave it" response. and now I went to thread it on my action, and sure enough the barrel nut goes on smooth, but the action is super tight after one turn. I wonder if I'll be a repeat customer......... we'll see what happens I guess. I'll post an update when I hear back, hopefully their response gives me the option of getting what I ordered, in a timely fashion. I would be willing to buy a whole new barrel if they would just get it to me asap. I don't build rifles to sit around, I need to USE it. its like waiting 6 weeks for a new engine and then having it be the wrong one and then have to buy another engine and wait another 6 weeks.
