This is my Axis in .308 bench rested at 35 yards 4 rounds, bench rested with Simmons Pro Sport cheap scope. Groups are deer accurate. Winchester Super X white box 150 grain just sighting in. This is in the plastic stock.
http://i39.tinypic.com/353779v.jpg
This is in the Boyds stock, bench rested at 65 yards, again, sighting in. Everything is the same but the stock. The 1st shot was high and left again, 2nd and third making sure it wasn't me flinching. 4th shot, adjusted just a hair, and getting there.
But look how tight that 2nd and 3rd rounds were together at 65 yards in this stock. Measured less than 1/4 inch at 65 yards on the bench. It really seems to tighten the groups up a little.
I'm going to tweak this budget setup tomorrow and I know 65 yards is not much to most people, but that is very promising for a bubbafied kitchen setup. I will post results after me and the boy get out and get a doe for his youth season :).
I hope to have my classic/nutmeg tues
I have to say, these are the low-buck briefings I love,
Pics, results, perfect
My imagination conjured up quite an image, sitting @ your kitchen table, all comfy, shooting out the window.
Nice job - good luck to your son
luck,greg
My replacement has arrived. Fitting and testing sometime this week.
Anyone know the torque settings for a laminate stock?
Cheers
Jas
Thank you Boyds
I ordered a "classic nutmeg" - I'm often old school
It was "in stock" and came in about a week - nice
I'd love to show pics, but will not use url linked to my computer (I'm a touch paranoid)
However, it's nicer than expected for a cnc stock, I like the feel better than my composite
The fit was snug, tho' I slid a paper towel between stock & barrel
The finish is smooth while not slippery, (I anticipated some 0000 steel wool) - VERY NICE
THANK YOU RANDY
luck,greg
Rec'd mine today forest green/classic, the fit was perfect ! Even with my after market trigger. I just have to add a red dot under the safety tag.
Great job Boyd's ! Now PLEASE make a stock for the savage B-mag !
thank you
Got home from work today and the stock was waiting for me! Other than being slightly tight on the bolt release it fits like a glove. Now to find the time to sight it in before rifle season starts.
Excellent job Boyds!
Thanks Lisa for your help on the phone.
Ordered mine on Thursday, and it's on the truck and scheduled to be here tomorrow. I must have ordered at just the right time.
Hello all. I am new to this forum and wanted to chime in as it pertains to my Axis. I have been lurking on the site for a while now, but did not want to register for yet another firearm forum, but here I am...
I received my new Boyds' stock today (classic in pepper) for my 223 stainless Axis. After attaching the action to the stock, I found it does not work. I am encountering two problems, one of which other people seem to have encountered with the prototypes, and the other I have not seen mentioned:
1. The bolt release does not work when the action is attached to the stock.
2. The magazine catch does not work, and the magazine falls out every time I cycle the bolt. Rounds will feed from the magazine, but the magazine drops out as you cycle the bolt back closed.
Anyone else encounter #2? I received the correct stock (at least it was labeled short action) and the magazine feeds, but will not lock in place.
I will be calling Boyds' in the morning, but wanted to see if anyone else experienced this with their new stock?
Thanks in advance for your replies.
Jay, mine's a 270 long action, FWIW, my bolt release is tight, but satisfactory, and my magazine release is tight (very) but also works ok.
I'm going to use mine as-is, since I wonder if I just got used to having a little slop for mass production purposes.
I too have to red dot the safety, as mentioned, no biggy
luck,greg
Tight would be fine by me, but both problems can not be used as is.
I pressed as hard as I could on the bolt release, and got nothing.
And as for the magazine, it is the opposite of tight, it falls out when cycling the bolt.
I'm sure Boyds' will take care of it. Between their responses here to other members that I have seen along with their long reputation for quality and customer service, I am sure they will have a new one on the way.

Mine is exactly like yours. Both are easy fixes. First the clip. the wood of the stock around the clip prevents the clip from being easily pushed in. Take a bit of sand paper and sand away at the sides near the front where the clip snaps in. It took very little sanding to get mine to pop in easily. Now it clip in easy yet is very snug. The bolt release is hitting the stock. Again all you have to do is a bit of light sanding where the bolt release hits the stock. Alternately I bedded mine and put a tiny spacer .035" under the rear action and bedded it that way so no sanding was needed on mine.
Anyone else bed the action? Front and back? This is the second Boyds stock I installed on Savage rifles. Both had to be bedded or the barrel was visibly crooked in the stock.

G-manz35... any chance you could give us some more info on the bedding job as I'm sure others would be interested in a "How To".
Cheers

this is something I want to find out about as well. where bouts you at jas - you mentioned you were down under, just how far are you. I'm in np! Yet to order stock, doing a trigger job Ist from rifle basix http://www.riflebasix.com. I have small hands so will avoid the thumbhole though it is what I would like best. Nearly all thumb hole stocks I have held, just don't work for me - bugger.
wasn't very impressed with shooting results either. some was due to me due to lack of practice and the rest was crap rounds. best so far was Fiocchi at about an 1" at 100. Barnaul was the worst at over 5" with fliers all over. Did not like 60grn at all. do mostly goats so happy with 55grn. I will do a load development soon as time permits. don't want to pay $30.00 a box of 20! will try Belmont ammo from Wanganui before that though. they have excellent prices, and if ok and suit the rifle, would go that way rather than reload!
I am sure a decent stock will help my cause - les
Ordered mine on the 11th of October and it has been stuck at USPS ISC in Chicago since last Monday the 28th!! This is sooooo not cool!
Ordered one for my wife's Axis last night... Thumb hole style in green camo (her choice). I hope it doesn't take very long, I'm quite anxious to see what improvements it makes (other then looks) for her rifle. NOW, if only they would make a Lefty version available for me...
I have great hope about the lefty model, I see where they offer a left hand stock for a Mosin Nagant rifle. If the company is willing to make a left hand stock for the shooters of a right hand military surplus rifle, they will hopefully make one for an actual left hand commercial rifle. I can only hope anyway. :)
FWIW I too had the bolt release issue, but it was easily corrected. It actually took longer to get my dremel and plug it in than to correct. The "arm" of the bolt release was just barley contacting the stock internally at the lower "shelf" below it. it was very apparent by the slight indent it was leaving in the area of contact. Just took a very slight 45 degree trim of the edge and it works perfectly.
I have not bedded and probably won't. I did however add a spacer under the action at the front screw to kind of create a pillar in that it contacted the bushing that is underneath at the front screw. I had always used 35 in/lbs for the screws and it had worked perfectly. However, this allowed the bushing to compress (over a couple of days) the laminate and when re tightened the screw was slightly into the bolt area preventing cycling. It is now stable as a rock with both action screws @ 35 in/lbs and thru two 30-50 round range sessions (.308) it has not loosened one bit.
First session was with factory 168 match to retune and then next session was doing an OCW test. With 168 Nosler custom comps, 8208 XBR in SSA brass I found the nodes in it's current set up. Was able to get consistent groups averaging .632" off a bipod and rear bag. I think a little more work and some practice on my part, I should be able to get it down in the 1/2" range. Prior to the stock, I had dialed in 1.5" groups @ 200 yards....and for hunting, that works just fine in my book.
I'd be more than happy to share what I have done with everyone, but I am in no means an expert on bedding rifles. I'll toss a few pics together once I'm done and give a brief description.
What I can tell you now is that the barrel did not line up with the stock. I wrapped the barrel with masking tape so that it was snug in the stock then I used a Dremmel to cut a channel around the front action screw and around the front of the rear action screw. I also put a small spacer under the rear action screw to lift it ever so slightly then I bedded it with a Miles Gilbert Bedrock bedding kit. I will not have a before and after range report as I never shot the rifle before bedding, but I will certainly be able to compare it to the factory stock as I have shot 1000 or so rounds out of it already. I will probably start a new thread and add some pics when I'm done.

I called Boyds' today and they were more than helpful. They offered to either ship me a new stock (overnight) for free, or let me speak to a tech and he would walk through the mods needed to fix it. If I chose to fix it myself and was either unable to fix it or screwed it up in the process, they said they would still send me a new one. A+ to Boyds'!
As I suspected and you all informed me, the fixes were rather easy. I just wanted to make sure that Boyds' would still allow a return in case I messed it up.
So after 10 minutes with a small file (I keep a set of jeweler's files on hand specifically for my guns) and some sandpaper, I was good to. It fits like a glove and works 100%.
Can not wait to get it out to the range this weekend. Once my range closes for January and February, I will glass bed it for good.
Thanks for all the help!
I am in new plymouth
I wish to know if the metal piller posts are included in the stock, Or we need to do them ourselves. can't make up my mind which one to get, but have discounted the thumb hole as I have small hands and short fingers

Her are some pix of the stock. As you can see its free floating and looks rather nice

Thank you Mr Wolf!
I have heard that some stocks run better when the front and rear screws are torqued to a particular tightness. Anyone have any recommendations for these new stocks?
I received mine today thumb hole pepper
Got my Praiire Hunter in nutmeg, had to sand a little on the the bolt release notch, took 2 minutes, work good and looks even better
$116.71 delivered, in about 1 week
This was why I asked the question about having pillars installed. They are one of the reasons why the rifle will shoot well, straight out of the box. Timber is forgiving and compresses, each time a bolt is pulled up, it will compress further. It is not one of those things where the action is taken out every day in which case it would not long for the hole to fall apart. once it is in its in. I have yet to order my stock and I will be pillar bedding as well as a full bed even before I start shooting, but that is just me. I am on limited working hours at the moment so funds are tight. The stock for me is not a priority at the moment. By the time it reaches New Zealand it will be close to $200 kiwi with freight and exchange!

I ended up talking to one of the techs over at Boyd's named Wilson and he explained that I need to just sand or scrape off a little bit on the rails inside the mag well. Fits like a charm now.
Great customer service. Thanks again Wilsom
Found something today that might fix the bolt catch stock issue. I had the same problem and after checking things out I realized that when I did the trigger spring modification that I had used a small screw to hold the new spring that had a head sticking out on the underside of the trigger assembly. This was touching the bottom of the stock which rocked the whole assembly fwd. this caused the front of the trigger to bottom out and then the bolt removal catch couldn't be depressed enough to remove the bolt.
As soon as I replaced the screw with something that didn't protrude past the bottom of the trigger, everything functioned perfect.
Just a thought that might help out if anyone else has the same problem.
Cheers
Any news on a lefthanded version?
None I've heard of so far... I do hope they don't take too long to decide. If they have no plans for a Lefty model, I would hope that they would announce their intentions on this forum, one way or the other. My wife's Boyds thumb hole model stock is due in this Thursday, once I get her's done I'm sure I'll want to get started on mine (which is left handed) ASAP. I'd love to have a nice replacement laminate stock, but if it's going to be too long I'll have to modify the factory one, or buy from someone else... If my mods work out well, then Boyds will likely loose a sale. Maybe no big deal to them, but a sad deal to me.
Must agree, I have just sold my right hand .243, and ordering a new Left hand .243 this week. didnt get a lefty first time round because they didnt make them then. Would be great to loose the factory stock for a boyds left hand one.
Yeehaah! I just picked up my FT thumhole in Pepper laminate from the post office. So it took 1 month and 2 days, but hey I'm well pleased. Man, is this a thing of beauty? It was definitely worth the wait. I will be starting tonight on the pillar-bedding and such. It is going to look so good on my stainless steel Axis. More beautiful than Sharon Stone doing her leg cross-over thing? Nah probably not, but it'll be beautiful none the less. A preliminary thank you to the people at Boyds. Let me first check the drop-in fit before I shower them with accolades.
I would like to see how you all pillar and glass bed the axis.
I am planning on doing it myself over the winter. Still looking for Boyds to make the tacticool stock for the axis has anyone herd if they are? I shoot prone and the tacticool looks like the best stock for prone/target shooting.
Hey Guys new to the forum and first decision was to order A Prairie Hunter in Camo Green for my .223. Ordered it last sunday online and it arrived this afternoon. Dropped right in perfect! Now 1 question, Anyone done anything to the finish? Just thinking I'd like to make it shine some. If anyone has done this what did you use?
Thanks in advance.
My wife is very very happy now with her new stocked Axis in .223. Now if they would only make a left hand version I could be just as happy too. :)

Was able to get on the range with the new classic stock. I'm amazed at the tight groups and the limited recoil. Worth every penny and I am grateful to Boyd's for giving a good entry rifle a greater amount of accuracy and admirable appearance!
Hi All,
I purchased 2 Boyd's stocks one Prairie Hunter for a 30-06 and a Thumbhole for a .223. I'm looking to bed the .223. I've never actually bedded a rifle before, but I've researched it to nauseam and I feel like I can do a good job....... And if I screw up...... it's my gun!
My questions or pleas:
I can figure out bedding the barrel end but the action end is somewhat a mystery because of the trigger assembly it doesn't leave much area to use as bedding. Can someone post some pictures of the action end of a Boyd's stock bedding? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Can I just add bedding to the barrel end of the action and maintain accuracy?
On the trigger assembly, there is a silver bracket on the front of the assembly, that the action screw goes through to the barrel. In the stock area, is the "silver bracket" supposed to be free floating or does it rest on the cut out in the stock? It has a small pivoting motion(with the trigger assembly) when assembled on the barrel. I'm assuming I can't bed around that bracket?
Pictures are great.........I'm a visual learner!!
Sorry for all the questions and thank you in advance,
Joe
I would like to know too how you guys bed a savage axis? The recoil lug is different and the rear action screw area is different. Pictures would be grate!!!
Here's how I bedded mine. I routered around the front action screw and around the front of the rear action screw. I used a bit of putty to keep the bedding compound from getting into the rear action screw or getting back to far and interfering with the trigger mechanism. I also used a bit of masking tape folded over to shim up the rear action .025". You can see a bit of the putty is still in the stock. Sorry that my bedding compound is black and it makes it herd to distinguish between it and the plastic that comes with the stock.
Hope this helps. I'm not a pro so I'm not telling anyone how to do it. I'm merely sharing what I have done.
