Floating the tang..

I just built this rifle and am concerned about the tang binding with the stock. Is is possible to use cardboard to space up the action such that the tang doesn't bind? Also, can you give me some insight on how to correct this in a more permanent fashion. I'm assuming bedding the action would be the permanent solution but wouldn't the rear pillar need to be raised to float the tang prior to bedding?

You need to sand the wood down under the tang area until the tang floats. That is the best solution, and then shoot with it after that, you may not need to glass bed it. Trying to "raise" a bedded in pillar is most likely end with you destroying that stock, just sand the wood and get it over with.

The cardboard under the action is worse, maybe than the tang touching the stock. It's okay to sand it down a bit under the tang. Just do a little at a time and test fit till you are satisfied. (About the way you have it in last pic).

I would say it would be best to sand the stock, but if I was going to shim the pillars I would use aluminum shims, (front and rear).

Also if you bed the stock you can leave the pillars where they at at.

I agree with what the other guys said but I will point out that I would bed the rifle first, and then remove some wood to float the tang if what you are trying to accomplish is to float the tang

I tinkered on it tonight and lightly sanded around the tang until I could get this business card down in there with a slight resistance. I want to get this rifle as accurate as I can before I consider bedding it.
