.250 Savage feed issues with short action mag

I took an Axis and replaced the 7-08 barrel with a .250 Savage barrel and it won't feed properly with the 7-08 mag. I am wondering how different the .22-250 mag is from the 7-08 mag. If it feeds .22-250 correctly, it should feed the .250, right? Looking at the 7-08 mag and the .22-250 mag does not seem to show much difference to the eye. The front of the feed lips on the.22-250 may be turned out a bit more in the front than the standard mag, but that is all I see. Anybody with experience modding the standard short action mag for .22-250?

I think all those have .473" diameter bolt face??? I would start by confirming the bolt face diameter is the same just to be sure it's not that.

Yes, they are all .473. The difference is that the 7-08 case is longer than the others. Combine that with the heavy taper of the .250 and .22-250 and you get a cartridge that nosedives out of the mag and the bullet tip hits the bottom of the barrel instead of going into the chamber.

The question is still whether the regular short mag can be modded or do I need to invest in a .22-250 mag?

If it were me, as cheap as mags are I would just get purpose made one

The 22-250 indeed has it's own unique magazine box and it's the same box Savage uses for the .250 Savage.

The 22-250 Rem/250 Sav. feed lips are actually longer than the feed lips on the Std. mag box used for 7mm-08, 308, 243, etc. On the 22-250/250 Sav. box the lips come out to about the middle of the third vertical indentation on the side of the box, whereas on the standard .308 box the lips just come up to the rear edge of that third vertical indentation.

The feed lips on the 22-250/250 Sav box measure a few thou over 1.700". The feed lips on the Std. 308 mag measure a couple thou over 1.500". The front of the lips on the 22-250/250 Sav mag box also flair out a little as well, whereas they don't on the standard 308 mag box.

Width of the feed lips at the front (before the flare-out) on the 22-250/250 Sav box is 0.380". On the Standard .308 box they're 0.400" apart.

I had problem with standard 250 Sav rounds jumping out of the standard .308 magazine before the tip of the bullet was started in the chamber, but no problems feeding with the 22-250/250 Sav. mag.

Of course now that all my brass is blown out to 250 Sav. Ackley I'm having some feeding issues with the correct mag as well due to the lack of taper in the body. Tried the .308 mag and still had the same issue with it clearing the feed lips before the bullet tip is started in the chamber which lets it fall down and catch on the breech face. As such I'm going to have to tweak the 22-250/250 Sav mag's feed lips a little to allow for the larger body diameter at the shoulder.

Thank you Jbaker. Looks like I need a new mag. That is what I expected to hear, but I have been told some guys have had success bending the lips of the standard short action mag.

That may be possible. I have a blind mag centerfeed rifle in .22-250 and is using the standard .308 housing (says "STD Short" on the side of the housing) and it feeds fairly well. I do have the occasional round pop out and jam the tip of the bullet into the breech of the barrel below the chamber, but it works fine 90% of the time. Not sure if it could be sorted out with a little more tweaking or not, but at this point I haven't bothered to mess with it.
