WIN primers pitted bolt, what are my options...

Hi all

Few months back noticed black rings around primers, also pin holes in primers at the edge. Also noticed pitting on my bolt face, .308 10FP.

My loads were by no means hot.

Did some research, and read where Winchester primers were giving some bad results. Called Winchester and they said send in box of primers, spent cases.

They called today and said bad primers, going to send replacements and told me to get bolt repaired, and they would reimburse me.

Never been down this road, so do I sent bolt to Savage, do they need the entire rifle.

Are there better gunsmiths to send to for this work?
Or complete bolt replacement

I had exactly the same problem about a year ago with a box of WLR's. Same deal with Winchester - send 'em back & got a credit slip in which I had to drive 45 miles to redeem & replace the primers. With more WLR's. The second batch was OK.
I continue to use the same bolt heads without issue. Unless they're worse than these, I say leave them alone.

Well, seems a bit more than yours...

I had this same scenario with cci's back in the 80's and my cousin kept firing while I retrieved the brass and to my horror the primers were all blown with light loads.They didnt seem to care so you are lucky.I would buy a ptg bolt head and send them the bill.You in the meantime can still fire the gun for hunting till the bolt head arrive's.Not many companys have them in stock right now .When you do actually replace it you will have to reset the headspace.

Yup.... That does look a bit on the toasty side. I think you're looking at replacing it. However you decide (factory type or PTG), don't forget to check your headspace.
