Probably late 50's-early 60's (someone else will know for sure). Early "post mil" gun and yes the pad is an add on. If the barrel had a raised "boss" for mounting the rear sight it is an "F" lightweight gun.
Thank you Eric. It did have a milled riser for the rear sight. When did Savage move the safe to the top ofthe receiver? Does the safe on the top indicate a late "late" model? The shop is asking $440.00 for a 75% gun. But, not abused. No scope ever mounted. No scrathes, only wear. Definetely a deer slayer. I love the light weight... and got the fever. The only Savage on my stable is an Anschutz-Savage 22LR.

The moved that (and made other changes) right at the 1,000,000 SN mark (1957 or 58? someone will correct me). The pre-million (pre-mil) rifles are more collectable, but the early post mil rifles are certainly fine guns and $440 is a bargain for a lightweigth 243 if the only thing bubba did to it was put a pad on it (bore is good?).
The pencil thin lightweight barrel will make groups move when it gets hot, but that is no problem at all for a hunting gun where you will never shoot a 5 shot group!
Here is a late pre-mil 243 "F" that I have. Great shooting gun.

Thanks guys!!! Going to the shop after 3 Pm to pick it up. I'll post pictures. As a hunter, I never use semi autos, but I walk a lot. So the light weight, set my heart on fire.
