Now that they've been out for a while what is the general thinking on the Oryx chassis?
They're obviously an entry level option, how do they seem to be holding up?
How do they perform with a little skim bedding, how about those running metal to metal?
How are they on rifles with a little recoil? Easy to get back on target, track well?
General impressions?
I have 3 Oryx and love all of them. Biggest caliber I have is .243 so can't comment on larger rounds. But with the straight beam design and thick recoil pad I imagine they would handle large calibers very well.
I run them all with 12FV actions and custom barrels. They mount so solid that I have never bothered with trying to bed them. Instead of buying the different colored panels I just got them all in the base green and painted them with Krylon. I have 2 early ones and the newer unit I received had a noticeably better/smoother surface finish. Glad to see they continue to improve them.
I drilled out the front sling swivel so I could mount a pic rail as far forward as possible. And I put the upgraded grip on 2 of them, but the included one works just fine. MDT has huge x-mas sales on overstock and blem units...too bad you just missed that.
They are a great, simple, reliable chassis. I would do it all over again...
I have two Oryx chassis one on a .223 12 FV and one on a 6.5mm 12 FV.
Both actions dropped right in.
The AICS mags that I selected work well with the chassis and feed beautifully.
If you choose carefully, you will have plenty of length to load out to get close to the lands.
If you don't pay attention to the AICS mag you select, you might not be able to do that.
The chassis on both are solid and fit beautifully.
The 6.5 mm CM actually improved accuracy with the Oryx by 28% because it eliminated the cheap factory stock flexing.
The .223 improved accuracy but about 20%.
If I buy another 12FV, I will definitely get another Oryx.

For those running the Oryx what barrel length/contour are you using?
How's the weight/balance?
24"-27" standard Savage varmint profile. The chassis itself will take a huge bull/no contour barrel if you wanted. They weigh 13.6lbs+ fully kitted with scopes.
Does anyone have them in stock?
Legacy Sports in NV had a few, pulled the trigger and ordered one this morning.
Which mags are you guys having the best luck with? This will be a 308 on a SA.

Magpuls have worked fine for me, but they are single stack and pretty long for a 10rd unit. The MDT metal double stack mags are really the way to go...

Hi Fuj', what magazine did you go with? Does it give you the ability to reliably load past the SAMI 2.825"? Thanks for any information.
I have the MagPul 5 round magazine which allows 2.86" COL and Accurate Steel 10 round which allows 2.875" COL.
Edit to add: This is with PTG SA bottom metal but that's irrelevant to magazine COL limits.
