I have a Savage Varminter 223 with a 1-9 twist rate and a 26" barrel. What would be the optimum bullet (weight, length and type) for coyote hunting? I would be shooting out to 300yds. at the most. I have quite a bit of H335 powder on hand also.

..About 26grs H335 with a 50gr NBT should get-er done...Or 26.1grs of Benchmark & a 55gr NBT.. ;D..
Both real good choices. I've had good luck also with TAC and 55 gr V-Max.

I've got an ar with 1:8 twist and a savage with 1:14 so I settled with 23.5 gr benchmark and 55 gr vmax. The ar will shoot them sub moan and the bolt action about 3/4" at 100 yards. Accurate out to 500 yards in both rifles.
I'm currently shooting 25.8grs imr 8208 with 50gr NBT.Getting 3228 avg out of 22" stevens barrel. I've shot it out to 450 yards.
my single shot 223 will put 50 gr vmax's on top of each other all day long with 27gr of varget but it did not like the 53gr barnes at all! And the funny thing is that when i started loading the 50 gr vmax's i just picked a random load and seating depth and it just so happened to be the miracle load.
Now i have a model 12 FV i picked up on a trade and im gonna try out the barnes on it and maybe some partitions or accubonds for hunting but for competition i plan to use the 68gr hornady HPBT.

Probably overkill - but a 69 SierraMatchKing and Varget seem to be a perfect combo in each Savage 1:9 twist I have tried. Great performance with this bullet. Personally never used in on a coyote, by crows go "poof". Luck, Tim
i cant wait for hornady to put out the bullets for 224 in the GMX. I know they are making loaded ammo already and i read that bullet will be in a 55 gr version. I loved the gmx in 308.

My go to load for 223 is 55g hornady v-max topped with 21.5g of IMR 4198.
I have had the best luck with 26.5 Varget and 50 gr. Sierra BKs and also 26gr. Varget with 60gr. Berger flat base hp. Tried heavier bullets but just never was able to get one satisfactory. The 50gr Sierra will definately stop a coyote. Used the 60s more for paper shoots. Quick
the new 53 vmax has a better BC then the 60's and will do 3400fps in a 223
+1 on what Ring31 said, used with 8208 XBR it can't be any better.
Will have to try these.Quote:
26gr. Varget with 60gr. Berger flat base hp.
What speeds do you obtain with the above load?
55 gr Sierra Gameking HPBT 26.0-26.9 Varget
This bullet is extremely accurate in every 223 I have tried it in
.3 to .5 3 shot groups at 100 yds are common (stock stevens 223)
Friends have taken hogs with this load, one actually took an axis deer
I load the same bullet in 22-250 for a friend, he says coyotes hate them
