Action squeaking after stock swap - Help!

Hi folks,

First, let me state I'm new to bolt actions and even newer to blind mag bolt actions. I just rec'd my Boyds stock for my 11 Hog Hunter. Prior to jimmying around with the mag, while in the original stock, the action cycled quietly as it should. I read here about how to remove a blind magazine and followed the directions to successfully get that stubborn part out. I replaced everything into the new stock and now each time I work the bolt it squeaks like a neglected swing set. I broke it all down and put it into the original stock and though subdued, it squeaks in there now too. I must have jacked something up - hopefully something simple.

It makes no noise in either stock without the blind mag installed so that must be the culprit. Any suggestions on how to remedy this situation?

Your front action screw is rubbing the bolt head. Trim it shorter with a file.

Even though it didn't happen before removal and now does in both stocks? Like I said, this is new to me and I'm all ears asking for help but that doesn't make sense. If it only happened in the Boyd's stock, OK, but in the factory now as well, whereas it didn't before?

test: back the screw out one turn and see if it still squeaks.

Thanks folks, I appreciate the ideas. I have backed out all the screws and it still happens. To be specific - it only happens working the bolt knob up and down, being louder on the downstroke if that matters. Without the mag installed there is no squeak. I'll continue to try the suggestions. That said, I'm hesitant to file or sand until it no longer happens in the original stock. That's the part that nags at me. It was fine out of the box but since pulling the mag it squeaks in both. Could I have bent the mag with the wiggling to get it out?

You may have tweaked the follower or spring in the magazine, might try looking for some rub marks or maybe a bit of grit got stuck somewhere.

if it's doing it when you rotate the bolt there are only a few parts actually moving at that point that it could be and none of them involve the magazine parts.

Check to see if the magazine follower sping is pushing the magazine box lips up against the bolt body. Make sure the L-clip is installed correctly to keep that from happening.

Thanks folks, I appreciate the ideas - keep 'em coming. I'm continuing to try and determine any points of contact but being new to bolt actions isn't helping. I have a buddy that can help but can't get together with him for another couple weeks. One concrete observation I've made is that there is more side to side play of the mag in the Boyd's stock. Enough that I wonder if it ought to be shimmed even if it isn't the cause of the squeaking. I don't like not being able to discern what's causing the problem. I've come to understand 1911's and AR's so I suppose in time I'll know the in's and out's of bolt actions as well.

Now this is puzzling. Today, after doing nothing more than sitting in the Boyd's stock for two days, the squeaking is a solid 90% quieter. Could this simply be the metal settling into/mating with the new laminate?

I had that too and lubed things up on the bolt and it slowly went away. Was making me crazy.

As noted, just because the sun came up, doesn't mean that it caused my broken leg.

You might want to take the receiver out and grease up the bottom (or use the Hornady case lube in the white tub). Put back in tighten up, see where contact points are.

My original Boyds that came with the 111 is very good, the after market one I have had had to do that 4 or 5 times now, all points of contact other than the pillars gone.

Pull out, sand out, dremel out etc. Repeat.
