Possibilities for changing 10 .308 to something else SA?

I have a chance to buy a savage 10 pre accutrigger in .308 which has a beat wooden birch stock for $200. I was thinkijg of getting it and starting a project to switch it over to something different like a 6mm or 6.5, 260,etc. I would like to keept the action and buy a new stock and a heavier barrel and not need a new bolt etc. I already have a .243 so a mid range low recoil option sounds fun for this build. Any suggestions? I d also like to go with a choate stock in a non AR style, just stick with traditional set up. Thanks all.

I am in the process of puting together the parts and funds for a 7mm-08. Not as much of a barrel burner as the 6.5's but still shoots high BC pills at resonable speeds.

Both are good mid/long range calibers for targets/hunting.

The "help me decide" section has a thread titled "260 or 308" there's lots of good opinions regarding these calibers in there if you get a chance to read

Ive check midway and other shops online and it seems brass for both is hard to come by. Is this an xmas anomoly or its just hard to find for both. I do reload so im not worried aboit that aspect. Shoukd I be looking at a diffent store for brass. Suggestions

They have 260 lapua brass at midwayusa now. $95/100. The lapua is worth the cost. And if you look at it compared to say Hornady it isn't much difference.

Looked a few months ago at 308 brass. Hornady was $40/50 lapua was $80/100. Lapua being the better quality in my opinion.

The 6.5s are all good cartridges. But there's not a whole lot that they will do that your 243 won't do. I'd suggest you go with a 7mm-08 or a 308.

The 260 is a better choice since he reloads. 260 beats the 308 in ballistics across the board. It's similar to 243 but the setup (barrel length/accuracy) will determine the advantage. A 260 with a 20" barrel may not give you as many advantages for the mid/long range shooting over the others. 260 gives decent bc bullets that extra speed the need to accomplish the longer shots more easily. The 308 and 7mm-08 imo lack the powder capacity to achieve the best velocities with the heavier/higher bc rounds. 243 achieves the speed but lacks in wind drift etc due to the lighter bullets when you get out there a ways. But again the velocities and barrel accuracy will be determined on length/quality of barrel.

The BC difference between the 6mm 107 grain SMK and the 6.5mm 140 grain SMK is negligible. The BC on Berger bullets favor the 6.5mm, but only by about 6 or 7 percent. They can be launched at similar velocities from their respective 308 based cartridges. Wind drift is a function of BC and muzzle velocity, so the difference there would also be negligible. The 260 might have a very slight edge.

Is the possibility of using Lapua brass that much of a difference? You can push the 260 just a smidge faster but other than that I don't see much of a difference between the two. I have several loadings on my 6.5 CM brass and have only tossed a few for loose primer pockets. I can buy factory Hornady 140 amax, Winchester 140's and Prime 130 for less than $25/box, and then use the brass for reloading as well.
