Did my first scope lapping- what a surprise!
I broke out my new kit, alignment bars and lapping bar. I used the pointed ends, ok- looks close enough- turned them around like Kokapellis and walla! not aligned. So, tweeked them a little and then tried lapping. Man, do this one time and you'll do it everytime. You can just feel the difference laying the scope in. It's quite amazing when you do it the first time.

Agreed! I got the wheeler kit for Christmas and noticed the same thing the first time i tried it. I thought i was doing everything ok before but from then on out all rings will be lapped.
Re: Did my first scope lapping- what a surprise!
I was looking at getting a wheeler kit too. Is it recomended for aluminum? I'm going to mount my own scope this time. I usually have my local gun shop do everything, but the last time I had them mount a scope for me they leveled the redicle by eye, then handed me the gun and asked if it looked good to me. I figured I can do better than that. ::)

Mine is a Wheeler kit too. I mic'd the bar, it's perfect 1.00. I'm doing Alum rings, new Weaver tact rings with the 6 screw caps.
I always knew about this lapping thing, but now I see the difference. I did 3 sets, one steel others alum. None of them were round.
Re: Did my first scope lapping- what a surprise!
Another follow up- So, I'm looking at this lapping stuff, decided, "why not lap the rings to the mounts, and the mounts to the receiver" Hell, might as well lap everything! so I did, then lapped the rings again, I wasn't surprised I laid in some new marks after all that. Nothing more I can do, got to be a good bed for the scope I figure.

Or just use Burris Sig rings.
