I've considered buying an aftermarket chromoly barrel "in the white" (meaning unfinished, right?). I assume if I leave it unfinished, it will corrode quickly, right? What do most people do with "in the white" barrels?

correct on all its just bare steel. options would be to blue it, paint it or oil the piss out of it frequently
I sprayed a chrome moly barrel with Brownell's Aluma-Hyde II, satin black, and it came out looking good. It's a durable finish that doesn't require baking but must cure at least five days before installing the barrel. It holds up pretty well to bore solvents except for the extremely aggressive ones with ammonia
Dura coat works well too.
i have used "cold blue" , but it would probably have to be considered "minimal" protection. Jim
If you like "in the white", car wax works rather well.
Send it to me and I'll Cerakote it for you.
high polish!
there are several threads on here about nitriding your barrels& that is suppose to make them very corrosion resistant.
+1 for Duracoat. If you do Duracoat try the newer SL colors. I did an AR15 in Gray Wolf SL and Matte Black SL and it sprayed beautifully, smooth and seems more scratch resistant than the normal Duracoat. With that being said it does come out a hair glossier and I just stripped an AR lower that I did in SL to redo it in standard Matte Black (I had a underlying finish issue with it...).
+1 for nitride...Quote:
