This conversation with the Dealership actually just happened!

Dealership: “My name is ********, the Owner of ***** Kia. I am sending you this email because we are in need of some KIA Sedona' s. Over the last few weeks our pre owned Sedona inventory has been completely depleted. Therefore, we are reaching out to our current customers before using auction resources to acquire these vehicles. We would rather pay you more than go to the auction and gamble on unknown vehicles. In addition, factory backed interest rates are at an all time low and factory backed incentives at an all time high!”


Me: “It will cost you more than it cost me.....”

Dealership: “Do you have some available time to explore some options?”

Me: “Make me an offer I can't refuse. My wife loves the van and I'd have to be able to talk her into it.”

Dealership: “We would really need to have eyes on the vehicle and have you pick out the replacement. Once that has been accomplished, we could make that offer. We could set an appointment with one of our specialist to minimize your time here at the dealership. As I stated in my original email, we would rather give you the money than at auction.”

Me:

1. You have a need, not me…
2. We're happy with the van…
3. you want me to drive 2hrs round trip to meet with you…
4. Vehicle has just barely made it to the first oil change... not even a year old
5. I'd have to recoup what I've paid into it already
6. You'd have to beat my current interest rate
7. Your inventory is not my problem as we are not currently in the market for another vehicle

So, you want me to find and spend my time driving to Wilmington because you want our vehicle back to make money off it a second time and don't have a deal good enough to interest me in coming down there?

I think we'll keep the van...


Dealership: My intention wasn't to offend you. I've reached out to a number of our customers to try and create a win, win situation. I am pleased that you are happy with your vehicle. We are very happy that you are part of the ******* Kia family and thank you for your business.

Those conversations happen daily, across the country. And if every one of them had the outcome that yours did, dealerships wouldn’t bother. But many of those owners end up going back for more (debt).

You’ve got it figured out: they can turn your one sale into two more. From their point of view, it can’t hurt to try. After all, you’ve already bought one new car, so there’s no reason to think you wouldn’t be interested in another one.

On the last auto I bought They tried everything in the book to get me into every dealership I contacted.
I finally went there after one of them decided to do business my way and sent me an invoice with an out the door price on a vehicle they had in stock.
A quick inspection of the vehicle and test drive, and a little paperwork and being placed on their do not call list and I was on my way.
The service department didn't get the do not call memo. They called saying I was overdue for service but then couldn't tell me what Service I was overdue for.
I told them that all my maintenance was on schedule, and that I thought that they were engaging in shady business practices and might scare the elderly or weak of mind into service they didn't need.
They haven't called back since.

That's similar to the call I got from "Microsoft" about my computer. In broken english he said that my computer had contacted them and needed some maintenance. I flat out told him that he was lying. He was pretty insistent until I said that I didn't have any computers that would ever contact Microsoft since they were all running Linux. He hung up at that point.

Just last week I got a call from someone who promised my website the top ranking results on Google searches. I asked them which web site they were referring to (I own/maintain 4 domains). They didn't know and hung up after some hemming and hawing around.

I usually just hang up on them, but sometimes it's fun to see what kind of answers they come up with.

I got a similar snail mail solicitation from a local ford dealer about wife's Cmax that they really needed. Filed it in circle file.

Not to derail this thread, but I got lot of calls from the "Windows Help Desk" insisting I give them access to my computer to fix a virus. I finally put a stop to it by telling the guy this:

You know, we here in America have a real nut job in the White House, who really hates foreigners who try to rip off his "flock". And when I use words like (I used several words that will automatically flag the conversation for review by NSA ) the conversation is reviewed by our NSA and they WILL trace your call. So you never know when our President might just send a cruise missile in your front window to take out another bad guy. And if I were you, I think twice about reporting to work for several weeks or months. And if you're calling me from home, I'd move out tomorrow!

Never heard from him again.:p

Another fine story, completely true, and relating to OP thread.

Back in the 1990's I had a flight school and owned but also leased airplanes to rent out to customers. One of the leased airplanes was a Cessna 152 trainer, the N-Number was N757AF.

The owner got a call from a man purporting to be the husband of a woman who just made Captain flying 757's and wanted to BUY his N-Number to transfer it to her personal airplane as a birthday gift. And would he agree to sell the number for $5000.00 (or about 1/3 the value of the whole airplane). Heck yes, I advised him.

And so it was a done deal. We went to the FAA office and got him a new N-number which I painted on, and the old number went NOT to this guys wife after all, it was being bought by Boeing to put on a brand new 757. Turns out they do this all the time.

So, you might be asking WHO's Boeing 757 got the number N757AF ?

It was none other than Donald Trump's.

Well, the aircraft was actually sold new to an airline, but Trump bought it used and had been flying it ever since. Next time you see a pic of his 757, look at the tail number. N757AF.

I have a dealership friend, he will offer amazing deals every once in a while when they need to make their quarterly goal. They may lose money on that one deal but pick up kick back on the last 3 months of sales. I dont question a lot when I can buy a new pickup for 2-3k.

I went into a dealer in the month of August. I had researched the new truck I wanted and knew the numbers I could get it at. Salesman was quite nice, as usual, and when he brought the "finance officer" over, I gave him my offer. The salesman started walking away "I'll go get the keys so you can drive it around". We had left is office and were in the middle of the showroom floor and the Finance officer shouted back "don't bother, this guy has no idea what he's talking about". At that time, EVERYONE around there turned and looked at me and he was standing there. I felt embarrassed and while all eyes were on us said, *&^#you and walked away with the salesman shouting "wait, come back". I kept checking their website to to see if the truck was still available, to which it was. I ignored their calls, emails to me. In Nov, I walked back in to the same salesman and asked if he was ready to sale that truck? He asked what I had in mind. I told him "the same offer I offered you in August". On his 2nd trip back to me from the finance officer, I had told him at the start if I saw the finance officer I was leaving, I told him my offer will not change so quit coming back with his higher counter offers. The officer was going to pay for my embarrassment if he wanted to sale this vehicle. When I signed the deal, with another officer, he was kind of shocked at what I got the price to. Showed me I had bought it $180 less than they paid for it. "We'll still get money for the sale and stuff but great deal" he said. I hate going to them. Probably my last new vehicle....
