Does someone have a savage short mag opening on long action? Picture?
Hi-
I've never seen one of the mid-1990's long action/ short mag well rifles. Can someone please post a picture of the bolt open and the bolt removed?
Thanks!!
Re: Does someone have a savage short mag opening on long action? Picture?
All of the older 110's were long actions I have a 243 that is on a long action
all Savage did was put a long front bolt baffel on it to limit the travel of the bolt
with a short magizine box. Mine is now a 270 wsm caliber.
all that was done was change the bolt head and barrel.

I read that the mag cut in the receiver was shorter? Is that true? That's what I was hoping to see.

If someone doesn't beat me to it, I'll break out the big girl and take a picture for you.

I was hoping you'd show up geargrinder! You probably already know what I'm getting at- if I can modify a long action short magwell to be a 338 edge repeater if the price is right on the action. More metal to remove, and a bolt baffle to change (or can I cut it?). Possible?

Mine started out as a 308 with a regular baffle. It didn't have the one with the long leg.

Here's the picture. Sorry it took so long but the CFO said I had to take the kids shopping and hang the christmas lights before I could play with my toys.
You can just see the bolthead under the ring nut.

uhncood1,
Could you explain a little more? I'm not sure what you're getting at.
I used this action because I only planned on using it as a single shot not a repeater. I have a single shot follower, just haven't installed it yet.
If you want an easier path to a RUM repeater, I'd suggest a Centerfeed action (Stevens or Savage) in 300 or 7mm Mag. It will already have the correct bolthead. The mag opening is already opened up.
The only work that needs to be done is to modify the magazine for the longer rounds. You'd have to eliminate the L bracket and open up the ends to move the magazine back in the box and let the bullet stick out the end. Then you'd have to fix the magazine in the well somehow.
The only advantage of one of these long/short action is if you can get one cheaper than anything else.

Geargrinder-
Thanks for the pic! That's exactly what I was looking for!
I found a long/short at a price that I thought might be worth all the work to make it a repeater on the internet, hence I needed a picture of the mag opening. As you've told me before, any older long action can be converted to a repeater for a 338 edge if enough material is removed, and I needed to see just how much would need to be removed from a long/short. Anyway, I think I'm going to wait to find a center feed magnum action like you suggest for an edge repeater. In the meantime, I'll just do some switch barrel work with the short action I have! Now to get a switch boltface...
Thanks for the help!!!
