Axis XP .223 bolt release issue

Hello, hopefully someone can help a Savage newbie.
I recently purchased a gently used Axis XP in .223.
My problem is, that after sliding the bolt forward and cocking it, I cannot lift bolt back up, and slide back (decock) unless I pull the trigger (dryfire)
Any advice would be great. I have never come across this with other bolt actions.

* just a note that, after purchasing the rifle, I had to install bolt, as it was shipped with bolt removed"

Someone may have played with the trigger. You will need to back the overtravel screw off a turn or so. It is at the rear of the trigger. With the safety off you need to adjust it until the the trigger will not allow the firing pin to fall when it is pulled. Back off slowly until the firing pin falls. Now put it on safety and test fire. Adjust it until everything works.
