Preferred bullet for Savage 110 in 308

Hey guys, I'm shooting a Savage 110 in 308 from 1999. Was hoping some of you guys with this setup would be willing to share what your gun seems to shoot the best. I have shot mostly 150 gr core lokts. I know that guns shoot differently, but I would appreciate your input. I have heard that others like the 165 gr, and I was going to compare them to my 150s. I currently do not reload, but that is a hobby that I am considering. Currently, I shoot paper only to make sure the gun is ready for hunting season. Other than that, it would be used for whitetail deer in MS, GA and AL.

Savage's tend to like heavy for caliber bullets, for some reason.
They usually like 180 gr Federal Blue box soft tips.

What barrel length and twist? I have a 10T in 308 with a 24 inch bull barrel and 5R rifling. Loves Hornady 178 ELD-X with varget (I reload). 3 in a dime @100 yards. Banged steel @1000 yards last month. You will have to try different commercial ammo to see what your rifle likes. My brother bought a savage 10 FCP and found out his loves 175 gr Federal Gold Match (3 in a dime @100 yards). He tried the 178 ELD-X but sucked. Good luck.

The 110's and 10's from that time period were .30 cal usually had 22 inch barrels with 1 in 10 twist.

What I can tell you is that my previous pre-accutrigger 10 .308 (I've since converted to 7-08) and my current 10T in .308 have both hated 150gr projectiles. I've always had good luck with 168gr SMK, and my 10T does pretty good with 178gr ELD-X.

Get the 178 above 2700 fps and you will see it shine. Mine are 2710 fps which is a tad bit hot but it's very accurate.

I agree with the heavier is more accurate theory. 175 - 180 's shoot great. There is a price...recoil.

For out of the box ammo I've had good results with the 165gr Federal Deer Thug. (camo box)
Not sure whos bonded core bullet it's loaded with but the last pig I shot with it was tore up.
It's a really good accurate hunting load and not too expensive.

Accurate hunting ammo... Federal Premium 165gr GameKing & Federal Fusion 180 gr.

Match ammo... Federal Gold Medal Match 168/175gr MatchKing.

I am very fortunate. My 110 in 30-06 loves everything I feed it. I have shot 150 gr Winchester, 150 gr Core Lokts, 150 gr Speers, 165 gr Sierras, 165 gr Accubonds, 180 gr Core Lokts, 180 gr Winchesters and 200 gr Accubonds.

I am currently shooting the 150 gr Speer BTSP and 200 gr Nosler Accubonds. The 150 is for deer, pigs and goats, the 200 gr is for feral cattle. The 150 is sighted in about 1.5" high at 100 yds and the 200 gr will shoot dead on.

When I use up my loads of 150's I plan to switch to 165's. I prefer the sectional density of the 165 for deer.

I have had fantastic results with Sierra 175 Matchkings, Sierra 180 grain GameKings, and 185 grain Berger Juggernauts.

Always had good luck with Federal Partitions

Sierra 165 gr Gamekings and 180 gr Gamekings seem to be really accurate in Savage 110's

I really like the Hornady 165 grain sp in a .308. They tend to be more accurate in our rifles than the 150s and it is tougher, so it is not as destructive on deer.

I have an old 110FP in .308Win. Until I put the Choate stock on it it wouldn't shoot anything well. The aluminum bedded stock made it a rifle. Never understood why Savage would put out a tactical rifle with such a worthless stock as the one they put on it. As for the heavy bullets? I've never had any good luck with anything over 168gr. It will put 168gr Matchkings in 3 shot groups with each bullet touching the other at 100M. It also does real well with Hornady HPBT match 155 gr. As for powder I have found it likes IMR 4064 with the 168 gr and Benchmark powder wit the 150-155 gr bullets. Lastly, I found it never grouped well letting it free recoil in the bags. It likes to be held tight in the pocket.

My experience shows 165 sgk's and 178 Hornady's do well. Only 150's I ever tried have been Sierra's. They did okay right around to slightly over MOA, but the heavies are 1/2 to 3/4 moa at max. I never really had a reason to chase a more accurate load with the lighter bullets.
