I'm looking at a Savage 99 with a 22" round barrel. Straight grip with a crescent buttplate and chambered in .303. Not a takedown and serial no would indicate made in 1907. Any idea what model this would be? Thanks.

Thats a good question.
The only 1899 that came with a 22" barrel was the model 1899A Short Rifle but they didn't come with a cresent buttplate.
So either the butt has been replaced or the barrel has been cut down.
Take the buttplate off and see if the plate and the stock are numbered to the receiver.
Thanks Maddog. I read your article on models and the 22" barrel with crescent butt threw me off. Will dig deeper on this one.
Maddog....I have been told the 22" barrel was special ordered. Does that sound correct?
It does if the guy selling it is trying to screw someone over, unless he has a letter from the historian stating it was special ordered with a 22" barrel it's just someone trying to pawn off a bad deal they made themselves and want to get back their investment.
