Trade my Rem 22-250

I would like to bounce an idea off of all of you...

I currently have no projects in the works which is very strange for me and a little unnerving. I have a Remington 700 Varmint in 22-250 that I really love. its in a Bell and Carlson medalist and is extremely accurate. Besides the stock and a bolt knob everything else is factory. It does have one of the recalled triggers that has went bang twice when it shouldn't have, keep it clean and no problems. I have many prairie dog kills over 500 yards with this gun and one at 610 yards. It wears a Leupold VX3 6.5-20x40 LR scope that would get moved to the new one. Now with that out of the way it is getting up there in shots (id guess a bit under 3k) and I will not be going on a prairie dog trip again until 2015 so I have time for a build. I am kicking around the idea of selling it and using the funds to buy a Savage target action, high quality aftermarket barrel, nice stock, etc. I know I could rebarrel it and ad a new trigger but I am slowly becoming a Savage only guy.

What would you do? I really like the gun but building a Savage as nice as I can sounds like a lot of fun also and I can't afford both...

Hey Niles, if you can sell it and get what you need to get for it fine, but if you end up taking to much of a loss, I would keep it and re barrel it Remage style, and also have they original barrel set back and also Remage that one, that would be your best bang for the buck.

I say keep it and rebarrel with a rem-age barrel like dean said. I would also drop an aftermarket trigger in without thinking twice.

Good advice mentioned above, but I am not a Remmy fan so if you can get a good price for it, sell it and build away. Otherwise the above plans sound decent if you are ok with going to the Rem-age setup.

I have a few Rems with the barrel nut set up, and they are fine, if you end up keeping it change the stock, so it feels and looks like a different gun.

I am with most of these guys. Remage it instead of selling. You will not gain anything with a Savage target action. I have the same setup you have right now exactly. When it comes time to rebarrel, I will definitely go Remage myself.

One better is turn that 22-250 into a 22-243, with 243 brass easy to come by or 22 X 55 with Lapua brass $70.00 per hundred, and both would still use your 22-250 dies, you could launch those 69gr sierras 4000+ and 77gr 3800+ FPS, and not even be close to any pressure signs.

Yes yes you are!!! Your pm yesterday really got the head spinning. The 22-250 is my favorite cartridge and I feel like I need to have one in the stable but one of your other suggestions over 4000 fps just sounds like sooooo much fun! What to do what to do...

Personally I would re barrel and swap out the trigger . You have a nice solid platform to work with already .

Thanks for all the advice so far. NSS is in the same town I work in so either way I go the parts will be easy to get.

It is actually not that bad, and just like any other wildcat or higher volume case with a small bore, don't shoot wholesale amounts in a short period of time and you will be fine, as for a number there are to many variables, but I had over a thousand rounds down it when I sold it, and the guy still uses it on a regular basis and is still in love with it, it was a 14 twist and could shoot sierra 69gr if I wanted to, my go to load was 53gr Vmax's at 4400fps needless to say what it did to anything it came into contact with, 40 Vmax's at 4800 fps were also entertaining.

The 22-250 is a bit hard on barrels as is. 22-243 sounds pretty interesting. Ill have to look into that more.

They only thing that I know of, that has a one up on the 22-243 is they 22 X 55, and that is the most you can extract from a 22 cal bore efficiently anyways , yes I have heard of 22-06 and have looked in to it, and all you will end up with is 100 fps more with a 105 Amax, but half the barrel life of the two previously mentioned in this post, that is not enough gain and to much attrition even for me, which says a lot, for those of you that know me anyways.

Let me revive and old thread if I may...

I still haven't made a decision about this. But let me throw this wrench in the mix. I have a new McGowan 22-250 ai barrel threaded for a Savage with no action to put it on. Do I really want a 22-250 and a 22-250ai and have to keep the brass not mixed up?

Just put the barrel in storage and build on it someday?

Rebarrel the rem to something else like a .243 AI??

Sell the Rem and build a Savage off the new barrel I have?

So many ideas so little money is the problem lol

New barrel or new action is all about the same cost. Since you got a new barrel in .22-250 AI I would just buy a savage action and go from there. Then you could always rebarrel the Remington action to something totally different down the road or sell the Remington as originally thought and put the money into your new build. The .22-250 Ackley is far superior to the standard version and lets face it once you go Ackley you will never go back.

Just remember velocity alone wont kill any prairie dogs. The a i version 22/250 with 69 gr bullets can put a hurt on them out to 600 or so with no problem.
From that point your far better off with a 6mm than you would be with a hot rod 22 for prairie dogs. I have a 17 rem center fire that sends 25 gr pills at lightning
speeds also. It stays home in favor of my 223 when i go p dog hunting. So do 40 gr bullets for the 223. Mind you scaring them can be fun also, but hitting them
is really what its about. Id rebarrel the Rem to 243 ai or 6 mm rem ai or a 6/284.
