Foxx, what is your over all length with your 260ai barrel. I want a 6.5x284 but might go this route because I have a short action laying around but just want to make sure it will mag feed.

to Benefit from the case capacity in a 6.5x284, its much easier done in a long action if you still want them to fit in a magazine and not be a single shot. ALot of case capacity is sacrificed putting a 6.5x284 in a short action. If you want to use your short action id go with 260 ai.

For what its worth I just finished building and tuning a load for a friend of mine in 260AI. 26" McGowan barrel and 44.7gr of H4350 is giving me 2958fps and well under half moa at 200 yards with a 140 berger set .025" from the lands. My 260AI is running 2940fps with 44.0gr of H4831. These are doing everything my 6.5-284 is doing which runs at a flat 2960 with 56.0gr of Retumbo. The 260AI is much more efficient with less recoil and easily fits in a short action.
Moral of story, in a long action 6.5 284 has the edge, short action 260 ai has the edge. no reason to build a 6.5 284 on a short action unless its a single shot or you already have an action and your on a tight budgetQuote:

Yep, that's the kind of info I was looking for. I plan on building something light weight, -8.5 scoped with a 24" tube at most. I would like to use a Northland Savage Varmint action and all he shows is short actions with detachable mags, I just wanted to makes sure I didn't get a Criterion barrel and couldn't reach the lands and still function in the magazine because I'm having that problem with another gun right now.
Shouldn't have a problem. I've built a 260AI and a couple standard 260s and have no problem with seating depth with a short action savage.
It might depend on which powder you use. With the factory 260 barrel, I could not get my Hornady Match 140's to max load using H4831. (Powder was compressed way short of max load). I am not having the same problem with H4350, however.Quote:

This last one I did had a considerably shorter throat than mine and I was still able to get a long vld seated over the top of 46 grains of 4350 no problem. I run 44gr of H4831 in my Ackley and that fills the case to just below the shoulder in lake city match cases. I know that's not a max load but the velocity is where it needs to be and it shoots great.

Remember there is a 6.5-284 and then there is a 6.5-284 Norma. One is a lot faster than the other. Mine is a 6.5-284 Norma and with 57 grs. of retumbo its running just shy of 3100 fps with a Berger 140 vld. 1500' elev. and 75*. Zeroed @ 100 it takes 6.9 mils to get to 1000.
If it is the Norma chamber you need to run a long action.
I run 56 grains of Retumbo out of a 26" Norma chambered barrel and I am only able to get 2960 at 3000ft 70*. My brass are showing slightly flattened primers with this load.
I guess the question is why go the AI or even 284 route at all. What do you plan on doing with the rifle? My .260 remington is a terror out to 1000 yards with low recoil. I have been using both .243 Win and 7-08 brass along with some .260 Lapua I bought new. They all shoot the same. I have a 28" Lothar Walther LW-50 barrel on a Savage 12 SS Short Action in an XLR Evolution Chassis. I have the 140 Hornady Amax running 2870 with a moderate load of 43.5 H4350. I'm going to cut my barrel down to 24" and bump up my load to 44.5 or 45 as soon as my pilot comes for my PTG crown tool. I'm hoping to be right back around 2850 with the shorter barrel.
No matter what you go with the 6.5 just rocks.
The standard 260 is a good one and hard to beat for sure. Nice thing about the Ackley though is that it not only gives you a bit more velocity to buck the wind with but there is really no more brass prep after fire forming. Just neck size and load.

No, he's asking about the overall length of the 260AI to ascertain whether it will be a better fit in the mag box over the 6.5x284.
He's still undecided on chambering.
