Boyds Tacticool for centerfire?

For some background:
I shoot prone with a sling.
Having spent the majority of my adult life with my hands wrapped around the plastics of a black rifle. Subsequently, I feel more comfortable with more vertical grips. I have a Boyds Tacticool stock for my 93R17, and enjoy it. The grip itself is a bit thick for my preferences, but it being laminate means I can easily change that.
I'm looking for a stock for my 12 FV .223.
Does anyone have any experience with the Tacticool on a center fire? thoughts? Opinions?

I think I'm going for the Boyd's. Now I'm looking at what will be involved in converting it to a DBM.

I put a tacticool on a 300 RUM build I have started shooting.

I like the stock. I had to open the barrel channel a bit to accept the heavy barrel. It fit the barreled action well, sits well on the atlas bipod, and seems to ride the bag well. It is a laminate wood, that I thought was composite until I opened the barrel channel a bit. The finish is a flat black, that seems to have a bit of texture to it. Dual swivels up front and a single swivel in the rear allow for a bipod and a sling. The shape of the stockfit me well, but I realize that everyone holds theirs differently.

I will use this stock for future builds.

So there's enough wood in the barrel channel to open it up for a varmint weight barrel without thinning it out too much? I asked Boyds this and they never answered me. Any pics?

I think it's already open enough for the varmint barrel.

Just got my stock in. It is opened up for a varmint barrel. It took some work to fit the trigger guard and blind mag.
I am happy that this is likely an improvement over the stock plastic, but won't be satisfied until this has a DBM and is bedded.

I was just going to post a few questions on the tacticool stock. How does it feel shooting offhand? I think it will be ok shooting off bipods and bags.
I was wondering what the stock looked like with the black finish removed? Does any one have a pic of the stock with the black finish removed?

I am really looking into one, I want to be able to make the factory DBM work, I have thought about cutting the aluminum block out of my tupper wear accustock and putting that in stock.

Now THAT sounds interesting. I was looking at getting a Whidden bedding block and milling it for a centerfeed mag. Then milling the stock to match.

I shoot with a sling, though with a recent trip to the range to see how the local F-class league looks, I think I need to either get REALLY good from a sling or start shooting off a bipod to be competitive.
The stock, to me, feels rather good off-hand. Just like my rimfire tacticool, it's a wee bit big in the grip area for my tastes, but I'm used to ARs of the issued variety. Luckily that is easy to fix.

It probably looks very similar to their 93/Mark II Tacticool stock, which can be had unfinished from MidwayUSA:

I think it will make a good varmint gun stock. I am in the market for a woodchuck/coyote type stock, that is where the shooting off hand comes in. The pic on midway's site looks like it will be OK with a stain and a few coats of satin poly. I wish I could get it unfinished from Boyds. It would save me the trouble of removing the black finish.

That was my other thought was to buy the Whidden block but the thought had crossed my mind on the accustock block which is ready to go soon as it was out of the stock.

I don't know why they won't sell them UN finished

Did I see in another thread that Boyds was coming out with a Tacticool DBM stock soon? I am assuming it takes Savage DBM parts...

I also hope you're right! I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

Maybe if enough of us want a DBM tacticool we can go to boyds as a group and see if they will make a run of them. There more likely if they know they can sell x amount right off the bat.

I've got one of their tacicool stocks on my savage mk II FV-SR and I love it. Are you proposing a "group buy" of sorts? The more I look at the cost of some of the tactical stocks out there it's just a no brainer to buy a Boyd tacticool at the $100 they charge and if it was $200 I still think it'd be a no brainer.

I'd take a DBM tacticool, as it'd prevent the amount of money I'd have to spend on my current stock.

I have a couple tacticools on my rimfires and they feel good. A centerfire would be nice.

If boyds would return a phone call we could get rolling on these!

What I don't understand is that they sell other stocks inletted for dbm guns but not the tacticool. You'd think there would be a bigger market for the tacticools.

Yeah that's my too, and there pretty much the only stock I can just cut another bolt channel so it's on the correct side. Just wish they came in other colors than tacticool black.

Midway sells some of the tacticool models unfinished.

I bought a 1988 Sav 110 223 at a gun show in Feb 2013, to use the action for this project.
I bought a TACTICOOL SAVAGE® 10 BLIND MAG SHORT ACTION CENTER FEED BULL BARREL CHANNEL LAMINATE STOCK W/BLACK TEXTURED FINISH (4300603-1G-203)

I have a 4.522" receiver, which I could find no aftermarket stocks, but I bought that Boyds that is meant for a 4.415" receiver.
I had to mill out the stock for:
a) longer action
b) 1/2" pillars instead of 1/4" screws
c) .240" thick SSS recoil lug instead of .150" recoil lug
d) 1.2" barrel channel, not 1.05"

I put a Lothar Walther 14" twist bull barrel on the receiver with no barrel nut, just a shoulder pushed up against the SSS recoil jug. I cut a .250" neck 223 chamber.

I painted the stock with 083-002-211ALUMA-HYDE II AEROSOL, DESERT TAN aerosol one part epoxy paint in a cardboard box I heated to 90 degrees.
I made 1/2" aluminum alloy round rod into pillars pillars that fit the receiver's convex bottom.

I used Devcon PLASTIC STEEL ADEVCON 10110.

I drilled two 1/4" holes in the stock for a Karsten's Custom Cheek Rest A-Model.

very nice. I like your pilar bedding job. I have a rifle I have been considering doing that on as well, but I havent had the gumption to try it. You made it look easy.

That looks really well done and the results speak for themselves. Looks like you had to put in quite a bit if work. I'm seriously thinking about getting a tacticool to inlet for my 10 P-SR that's on order. I would have it much easier since the stock is designed for this model just without the dbm. Could you give any tips on what it took to do the inletting? What kind of tools you used and that sort of thing?

Unlike most sporter stocks, this tactical stock has nice flat and square surfaces for putting it in the vertical milling machine [drill press with an X-Y vise for those of you in Rio Linda].
You can do it with chisels, files, Dremel tool, router, die grinder, drill press, etc. It is easier if you have a mill.

My action is too long, so I had to pick a point to make them match and waller every other hole over. I picked the rear action screw, so that the trigger inletting would stay the same. If I had to do it again, I would do that again.

I'm thinking I might try to tackle the job now. I've never done any inletting before but I've always been the guy who tinkers and modifies everything. I'm pretty handy with a dremel and I'm going to be getting a drill press here pretty soon.

My plan is to remove the factory bottom metal and use it to trace an outline on the new a stock. Then I'll take my measurements for depth and lock the stock down to the press and start cutting. I'll probably use my dremel and sandpaper for the the finishing detail work. Does that plan sound like a good one? What types of bits were using in your mill/press?

You should look for some used machinery. I got a Chinese drill press from a widow for free and then sold it. I got an American drill press from another widow that I paid for.

The X-Y tables for the drill press also go from cheap Chinese to expensive American

I was actually planning on getting this press. Would this be a good cross vise? I'll only be using these tools for home type hobby stuff so I don't want to spend tons of money.

I can't see if that vise will fit on that drill press table. If if does not, you would have to make an adapter, probably a piece of plywood bolted to the table, bigger than the table, that the vise can sit on and be bolted to.

It is a gamble. 20% of the Chinese stuff I get from Harbor Fright or ENCO is worthless junk. But at a tiny fraction of the cost of American, I have to keep taking the chances.

So far I've had good luck with harbor freight, keeping my fingers crossed.

I would buy one if they made a short action dbm.

New here. Found this while planning a build based on a 11 Hog Hunter. Will be using the Boyd's Tacticool, but I'd be thrilled if they offered a stock that would accept the factory DBM bottom metal! Can't see how they could lose doing this. Hint-hint, Boyds.
