6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
Been thinking about another "project". ::) 6.8 SPC II on a Savage action. More pep than a .223 and less recoil than a .308. Anybody try one? Bolt head would have to be cut but the rest should be easy. Got a extra AR upper that could be rechambered but I'am leaning more toward the Savage build. Opinions??

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
Sure ... why not? Let us know how it goes.

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
I'am working on it!! Need to get a bolt head opened up to the 6.8 then the rest is easy. Just another "project" to keep me out of trouble. ;) Sure beats sitting on a bar stool. ::)

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
OutLaw's 224 204 Apache was based on the 6.8
Nice cartridge to work with.....SSA brass seems to be the best brass that I know of so far.

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
Outlaw's 224 Apache was based on the 6.8??? Seems like I might have read something about that a while back? Point me to the right place and I'll do more looking. Might find something to shorten the learning curve.

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
I would like to build one on a left hand action.

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
I'm sorry....it was suppose to be 204 Apache. :-\
It's under "cartridges" in the article section.
Here's the first one:

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
i bought one of the Remington 1st production blot actions and i like it well enough, but i will warn you it might lead to an ar-15 in 6.8, its a cool caliber and as of yet i have yet to shoot anything with it that didn't die on the spot.

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
I've got a "extra" AR upper that could be converted to the 6.8 but I thought I'de start with the Savage build and see how I like the round and go from there.
Mo Money, Mo Money, Mo Money!! ;)

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
I already have an AR15 and a contender carbine in 6.8spc dont know if a bolt gun could out shoot them but it would be cool to have.

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
I had a 6.8 spc AR15 and my dad liked the caliber so much he bought a mini 14 in 6.8.
One thing that is definately on my list for the future is a 6.8 savage.
Hardest hitting light recoil round I have ever used. Very nice.
Loaded with 85 or 110 gr barnes bullets its instant death to hogs.
Forget his name but a guy on Arfcom killed a 5X elk at 380 yards with a 110 gr accubond hand load.
Also teacher got a black bear and others probably about 1000++ hogs of various sorts.
SSA brass is the only brass to use.
Get a 12 or 13 twist with a DMR chamber.
Barnes is supposed to be coming out with a new tipped 100 gr TSX bullet for that rounds.
OT - I just loaded up some 270 weatherby shells with 85 gr barnes bullets.
Got 3750 out of them. Should be interesting hog medicine.

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
Mikie, i thought you had done the 6.8 upper already, gary the cool factor is more than enough for me. Even though it has some very good practical uses for the ares i hunt. This could be a "nich" for one of our sponsers, don't know if it would pay for them, maybe someone will let us know. blue

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
Gary: I've been talking with fred @ Sharp Shooter Supply and he said he has a "left hand" bolt head opened up for the 6.8 on the shelf. That's what you need for starters. ;) The rest of the stuff is about the same for a normal Savage built.
I figure if I get a bolt head opened up, that will be the hardest part.
Was trying to decide the best way to go, AR or Savage but I've settled on the Savage platform for starters.
If it turns out to be what I'am expecting, the AR might be next. ;D And no use being in a hurry. It'll all get done in time. ;)

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
If you are interested in a superlight AR, my 6.8AR weighed just under 6# with iron sights and a carry handle.
6#4oz with a scope.
My setup was a cav arms lower, Clark carbon fiber handguard, 4 pict rail gas block, std dpms flat top upper, bolt carrier etc, Calvary 16" lightweight barrel. Also had a dednutz scope mount (not light but I had it), Leupold ultralight 3-9x scope.
Really nice setup and extremely light.
Bison bought out calvary and they still make the 16" lightweight barrels with a DMR chamber I believe.

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
Thanks i sent Fred an email about the bolt face any body got a line on a med or light weight barrel?
-
Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
Light as you can make it.
20" max IMO.
16"-18" if you want it more handy.

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
Keep us posted on this. I am really interested in how it turns out.

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
Well pac-nor has the barrel still haven't heard back from fred how do you guys that know him get in touch with him?

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
IF you REALLY want a 6.8 SPC, make sure you do your homey-work first.
There are several chambers out there. If you want all the potential that was promised, get the SPC II, or DMR chamber, NOT SAAMI.
And excellent website with this info is: http://www.68forums.com/
I had a DPMS AR, that I later reamed to SPCII. There was a noticeable performance gain.

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
I see that there are barrels out there so now the question is the bolt head, mikie have you made any progress on that, or perhaps some one has has some other ideas? blue

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
I already have two 6.8spc's just thought a bolt gun would be fun to play with.
The way this is going i may just pick up a .223 and then look into a bolt head and barrel later.

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
The bolt head is "in the works". Got dies coming as well as bullets. Just got 100 pieces of SSA brass. Still thinking about a barrel. My plan is to have a barrel chambered with a short throat so I can start off with 90s and as the throat gets longer I can go to the heavier bullets. I do the same with my BR barrels. Can't shoot 50s if you can jam to the lands.
As far as chambers, from what I've seen (and I could be wrong) the SPC II has a longer throat and that wouldn't be good for what I had planned.
SAMMI is SAMMI. Just shorten the throat and you can jam your bullets. On a AR platform. the chamber might make a big difference as far as pressure is involved. No use having a barrel chambered with a reamer if it's not what "you" want. Kinda like buying a new car. If it's not the color you wanted, it will never be what you had in mind. Build it to "your" specs, that way you can't blame anybody buy yourself. No hurry on this end. Got everything coming. I'll load a dummy round and have the throat cut to that. All in good time. ;)
And Gary, I sent Fred a PM and he got back to me pretty fast. That's when he mentioned the left hand bolt head being on the shelf. With Lisa being under the weather for a while, my guess is that things in the email department might have got backed up a bit. Good folks to deal with. Just order what you want and it will get done. I told Fred to make a right hand bolt head for the 6.8 and let me know when it was done. Like I said, no hurry. ;D

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
NorCal,
Since you already have two, you most likely know, but the pressures of some 6.8 loadings vary widely. and the higher ones are based on the SPC II chamber, with the .10 leade to it. SAAMI specs specify a .050 leade.
The platform wouldn't matter as much as the chamber. You could start off with the SAAMI specs and if you run into high pressure signs then ream it to the new specs.
Another change with the SPC II specs are a 1-11 or 1-12 twist, with either a 3 or 4 groove rifling. These also keep the pressure down and are a main source of achieving the velocity potential of the little 6.8. The 1-10 twist will overpressure long before getting to the newer, higher published velocities. You would be wasting your money, in my opinion, to get a 1-10 twist and shorter chamber, since I have not read of anyone's accuracy suffering from the long leade.

Re: 6.8 SPC on a Savage platform??
Well i just ordered a left hand bolt face next step is to find a rifle to build from.
