Anyone shooting prairie dogs this summer?

My brother drove out from Iowa May 17th for a few days , we ended up getting 10-12 inches of snow that week. We did get out Sunday Monday and Tuesday and my brother ended up shooting around 50 prairie dogs each day , it was pretty windy. We usually shoot from 8 a.m. till around 1pm and then head to the bar for a burger and an ice cold Bud. We had a few turkey vultures and quite a few Hawks eating on prairie dogs this year also we had to watch out because there was a lot of burrowing owls this year on one of the ranches.

Yup.

Burrowing owls can do a really good imitation of a standing PD.
See a lot of them in the TX panhandle.
Supposedly they choose to nest in active PD colonies, and they do not prey on PD's.

Does the TX panhandle area have a decent population of PD's or have they be shot out in that area??

TX doesn't have public land, so its all private land shooting, but there are areas with lots of them.

Anyone mind sharing some info on shooting areas in general, any decent/good guides you care to recommend, places to stay, etc. ??

Nice setup for prairie dogs.
Try about 3 small dots of Velcro stuck on the barrel, and same on a venetian blind slat for a good removable heat shield.

I would first decide on where you would like to go, but keep an open mind on that.
Some states have no licensing required for prairie dogs, and some do.
Most of the best areas will be on private land requiring permission to hunt.
Id be looking at cattle ranching areas as opposed to crop farming areas.
Northern Wyoming and S E Montana would be high on the list of places.
Id simply pick an area and go, when you get there ask around and you will come up with a place to hunt.
Id say very few ranchers would turn you down if you drive up and ask, and one door will lead to others.
Devils Tower area in Wyoming would be a good place to start.

I took dad out on his first PD hunt a couple weeks ago, in Wyoming. We did fair, it was just so hot. I'm gonna try to get out in late May or June next time I go. Several people have told me those are the best times. The wind wasn't bad this year and the 17 hornet was really alot of fun.

Wyo85.....the public place you gave me a couple years ago seems to be about done. Went there for a few hours this year and it wasnt too good. There's some out there but about 5-600+ yds out. Nowhere near as good as a couple years ago when you told me about it.
