Ok, I thought I make this my first post. So I am just wondering if you can convert a model 110 from a 22-2.50 to a .308? And if so what is needed. I know that the 22-2.50 is a great gun, but I would like to get into medium to long range shooting, and I don't know if the 22 will cut it. So I figured I would put it out there and see what you guys think about this. What kind of distance is the .22-2.50 good for? Rookie question I know, but that is why I am here.
All you need to change is the barrel. they have the same head diameter, and mag.

The conversion is no problem, as Netz said, just a straight barrel swap. 308 is a good round too. To answer the question about how far is your is the 22-250 good for, has alot to do with how far is the shooter good for...
pdogs at 300 is no problem, Do-able as far as 500 if the wind is not bad. The drop for the 250 and a 40gr pill and 200 yd zero will be in the 40"+ range at 500yd. but the 308 with a 168 gr bullet will fall 50"+. The wind will effect the 250 much more then the 308. I had a model 12 set up as a 308 for a year or so. The barrel now lives in a tube and a 6 br is in its place for the longer ranges. Im much happier with it, still have a 22-250 for thump'in critters too thou.

I thought about doing that years ago but didn't. Instead I bought another in .308 (a 112). For varmit hunting you can't beat the 22-250. Its a lot cheaper than 308 to practice and reload too. But for long range or boars I go with the 308. I justified having both years ago...

110 in 22/250??? Why the long action? Did it come that way from the factory?

Several years ago, before Savage made a short action and before the popularity of the .223 sized cases, all there was was a long action. Seems to me it was about 15 years ago that the Savage short action was introduced. .22-250 was available from the factory in the long actioned rifle. I have VArmint Hunter magazines advertising the 112 long action in .22-250. Always thought it was wierd too. Now with the advent of the low VLD high BC bullets you can't load in a short action magazine, seems like a no brainer.
so the 22-2.50 will go the distance? But the wind is the main factor? Other than that, what are the pluses and minuses of just staying with the 22-2.50? Thinking of just leaving it the way it is, or getting a heavier barrel for it. Any advice is good advice. thanks in advance!
A++ on 22-250, I have been using one for almost 50 yrs and it has taken many elk with 1 neck shot and they don't move, Still use for Rock Chucks and its an old Mossburg 800 V.
I bought an old 110 in 243 years ago (same case as the 308) and converted it to 22.250 and shot two barrels out. It works fine. The problem with the 22.250 and long range is that the standard twist for the 22.250 for years was 1 turn in 14" which limited you to 55 grain bullets with horrible ballistic coefficients (BCs). Savage makes a 9" twist 22.250 now that works great, though.
I built a 22.250 last year with a 26", 1:10" twist PacNor 3 groove, Supermatch barrel and just for the heck of it shot it in our local 1,000 yard F class match. I think I shot a 735 out of 800 possible points with the Hornady 68 grain match bullets.
Fjold brings up a good point in twist rate. Another thing to think about is what you are going to be shooting at long ranges. If you are punching paper you just need to the bullet to get there and be able to predict the drops. But if you are planning on shooting something like steel silhouettes the 22-250 would get there but might not have enough poop left in it to knock down a steel ram at 500 meters.
