If this is the wrong section, please feel free to move it. I didn't put it in the aftermarket barrel section because I have a stock barrel that I would like to modify. The question is, can a stock sporter 30-06 barrel be reasonably rechambered to 7.62x39? And by reasonably, I mean from a cost standpoint. I have seen this done with a .308 but don't know enough to answer my own question.
I don't think there is enough shank to thread once enough of the old 30-06 chamber is cut off- the 7.62x39 is a much shorter round.
Ditto.....was just doing a side by side look at the 2 rounds. Might work if you have an extra 2 " of shank to play with for rechambering and threading. If not ur SOL.
Thanks guys. Thats what I was afraid of. What else can I rechamber this in that would be cost effective to shoot with moderate recoil? 30-30? Any other suggestions?

Check out Green Mountain Barrels... in the recent past they've had a couple 7.62/39 barrels in the raw
Mcgowen has them as I own one and they shoot real well.
there is an adapter sleeve made. I remember some one got one not to long ago.
built one on an older 223 long action. had to send the bolt head to SSS to get PPC conversion, but it works and was accurate.
I may be wrong but the 7.62x39 round is a semi-rimmed cartridge. The 30-06 is non rimmed cartridge. Therefore you'd need s different bolt face as well. a 30-06 can be shortened to a 308 because a 308 is just a shortened 30-06 casing.
Ptg makes bolt heads in ppc so that should work for the bolt head. Or for lighter recoil maybe a 300 savage or light loaded 308 30-06.
The bolt face is different so you would need to change the bolt head, the 7.62x39 is not a semi rimmed cartridge, its a different diameter(same as 6.5 grendel). And another issue that would be more of a problem is that the 7.62x39 uses a larger diameter bullet than the 30-06! A 30-06 uses a 308 diameter bullet and the 7.62x39 uses a .311 diameter bullet. If you want a cheaper round to shoot you'd be better of buying a factory barrel in the caliber you want!
Thanks for all the input guys. After a long conversation with my gunsmith, we pretty much decided that it can't be done with a sporter barrel. There just wouldn't be enough thread area once the chamber had been cut off. The idea of going 308 is bouncing around my head now. The whole point of this was to be able to shoot inexpensive ammo and to do something a little different.
For cheap ammo for range burning the 7.62 x 39 is the way to go......my Ruger Mini-30 loves the surplus military stuff.....$200 for 1100 rounds in my neck of the woods.
BTW. Have a Green Mountain Bull SS barrel on my Ruger 10/22.....bug holes all day long @ 100 yds.
Do you handload? For plinking cheap with a 30-06, this is what I have been doing to create cheap and low recoil rounds for my grandkids to shoot with my 30-30, 308 & 30-06- I'm having a lot of cheap fun with them:

If you buy rcbs does it comes with a .308 expander and a .311 .You can easily use .308 bullets in that cartridge case as the mini 30 is .308 now and was designed for both types of ammo in mind.I built a 7.62x39mm gun from an older long action .223 they built in the late 80's and early90's. It can be done and mine is a riot to shoot.I have shot groups as small as .368 at 200 yds with it using sierra pro hunter .311 bullets weighing 125 grains. I use 29.0 of benchmark powder and its a hammer.
if anyone is still interested in a 7.62x39 build, there is a barrel and bolt face on ebay right now (not mine, I just came across it yesterday). It is a shilen ss barrel about 18" and is at $90ish right now. Good deal for someone if they want to build one. should be able to pull it up on search. I think I had about $350 in my mcgowen barrel and ppc bolt head mod (by sss), so this would be a deal even if it goes up some by end of auction.
I saw that and have it saved in my ebay. Im gonna try and pick it up.
